Da Da (chh) Da Da Da Dum...

...Go Pack Go!

I've wanted a Lacoste polo shirt for as long as I can remember, but they are spendy like those damn Wüsthof knives. Perhaps this Trogdor shirt is equally cool and fashionable?

I was unsuccessful, but hopefully you can catch up with your unclaimed money - my referral fee is 10%.

We still have one turkey left, and I was thinking about frying it?

MMMM.... Toasty!

Since I'm all about using my credit card whenever possible to track spending, I really appreciate a fast food chain that embraces the concept. After being greeted at McDonald's and Taco Bell with "Pay with your ATM card!" signs (ohbythewaywechargeafee), the Visa logo stuck to the door at Quizno's was a welcome sight.

One might argue that their prices are a bit steep, but there's always coupons in the mail - I'm not sure if the straw needs to protrude 7 inches from the top of my cup though. After considering all the pros and cons, I'm proud to announce the official fast food joint of TMOTFMA:

Black Friday

I got up 19 hours ago to participate in the shenanigans that is affectionately referred to as "Black Friday" in "the industry". According to the Stockton Record (which we purchased solely for the coupons), this is because retailers take in so much cash that it wipes out 11 months worth of red ink. I find this hard to believe, since I plan to get back most of what I spent today in the form of mail-in rebates...

4:50 alarm goes off, leap into action
5:15 park at Best Buy, only to discover hundreds already in line
5:17 give up on Best Buy
5:25 join the Circuit City line, also extrordinarily long but doable
6:00 doors open
6:03 trample an elderly woman in a rush to get free blank CD-Rs
6:04 get in line behind 5 people
6:05 overcome with guilt, abandon spot in line to help the woman
6:25 leave Circuit City, grab a free donut while running to car
6:26 after driving perhaps a wee bit fast, arrive at Office Max
6:46 where is everyone? Half the stuff here is free after rebate
6:55 maybe I need to get one of these cheap DVD burners?
6:56 call Jeff in Phoenix to ask about DVD media, he's useless
7:00 doors open
7:08 basket provided "for my shopping convenience" getting heavy
7:09 while in line, tell stories about tackling the old woman
7:27 leave Office Max
7:42 get 50% off coupon validated at Michael's, leave immediately
7:51 try Best Buy again, there is still a line to get in!
8:08 get in checkout line, which currently starts in appliances
8:36 realize that it's going to be at least another hour
8:47 this is ridiculous, I'm going home!

Maybe I'll get over it before your trip. Until then I will leave you with this little teaser. Dear Santa

I have been a very good boy this year, and as a result feel I deserve some good shit for Christmas. H'ok? Great, I'm glad we're on the same page.

I moved to California this summer and can't stop drinking the wine, especially Pinot Noir. There are several books about wine that look good too. These glasses sure seem like a fun way to quaff, don't they? Do you even know what quaff means, Santa?

Sushi is another new adventure for me, and I want to try making it at home. Can you get me one of these fancy knives? I suppose I should get a book/kit too, so I have all the necessary tools & instructions. Since those Wusthof knives are crazy expensive, how about one of their wooden cutting boards?

Going back to that drinking problem I was telling you about - can you replace my flask? I can't believe they did a body cavity search at the Barry Manilow concert!

Anyways, the one thing that's been on my list since last year is a TV/FM Tuner card for my computer... please?

I already got 2 hole in ones (or is it holes in one?) with Strata golf balls, and these Slazengers are money! Men's Health would like me to supplement my meager watch collection, and who wouldn't want some Goo for Christmas?

Oh and now that I'm a homeowner, I totally need a laser level. I'm also a big fan of the Kill Bill movies, but still need to get Volume 1 on DVD, ok?

Ho Ho Ho,
-Bradley

Mommy, Look!

I took this picture from the top of the Empire State Building when we were in NYC last summer... My mom would be so proud to know that I am watching the Macy's Turkey Day Parade. She would not, however, be proud of the fact that we are on our way to buy another turkey, since we didn't bother thawing either of the two we already have in the freezer...

Tous Les Visages De' Lamour

You know that song by Elvis Costello from Notting Hill? It's a cover.

I know! It blew my mind too! Charles Aznavour is the French roll responsible for the original, this sample features excessive vibrato while this one is cheesy jazz-a-riffic.

If I knew the exact date my madre and padre were headed to Paris, I could start a countdown for them too...

Clean.

Nick's got a shiny new blog, which is all about his plans to hike the Appalachain Trail (hereafter referred to as AT, since I'm going to be talking about this like ALL THE TIME). I hope he does it, because the blog reminds me of how I started telling the whole world that I wanted to move to California, hoping that the critical mass would prevent me from wimping out.

I added a countdown to my hurty little website, so consider your mass critical-ized, NAJ.

I'm A Sucka

The new Maxim came today, and as I began my ritual of tearing out all the subscription cards and other page-flipping impediments I came across an "interactive ad" that required me to tear a zipper strip to reveal the contents...

I am now wearing a cardboard Burger King crown.

Why am I so enthralled by creative advertising? It's barely been 48 hours since I last wrote about it, now I'm reliving memories from age 7.

Speaking of things that came out today, Happy Beaujolais Nouveau! I tried to find some at the Raley's on the way home, but the guy there kept trying to tell me that it was a Beringer "Holiday Wine" and he always has a hard time selling it.

Anyways, this gripping headline pretty much sums it up.

Cryptoquip

I failed to blog last time I was in Minnesota, so apparently I'm trying to compensate during this trip?

I conquered the Cryptoquip in the SF Chronicle today, and I wanted to pose the challenge to my "legions" of readers... A Cryptoquip is a substitution cipher in which one letter stands for another. If you think X equals O, it will equal O throughout the puzzle. Single letters, short words and words using an apostrophe give you clues to locating vowels. Solution is by trial and error.

CV C EOLRRDH L GDOILCM NLQI TV QJ UKTD,
L NDOUTM GTWFH ULJ C'Q KTFHCME QJ ITMEWD.

I will post a comment below that reveals the hint I was given, but if you solve it without peeking you are supa cool...

  • Muchas gracias for giving me something to do at work as I wait for lunch time. I spent 15 minutes googling for an online substitution cypher breaker, then gave up and did it the old-fashioned way.
I cannot claim l33tness as I peeked at the hint. However, after setting up a supa queeny spreadsheet to hold the possible combinations, I was able to do it relatively quickly.

By Blogger Laura, at 11/12/2004 5:07 PM

  • I figured it out without looking at any clues, but there was a mistake in the cryptoquip. In the first four-letter word, the "Q" should be an "O".

These things are usually puns, and you'd be amazed at how many start out the same way. They also tend to use a lot of the same words in puzzle after puzzle. If you do them a lot, you can figure them out pretty quickly.

26,000

On the way home from work today, my car turned over the big two six thousand. I started to wonder how much all those wonderful miles have cost me, and decided to share with the class...

508 days (51 miles/day)
$4807 in car payments
23 MPG (roughly)
1130 gallons of gas
$2260 in gas (roughly $2/gallon)

Throw in a few hundo for miscellaneous oil changes, smog checks, and Mr. Clean AutoDry carwash kits - that's like $7500! 15 bucks a day! Holy poop!

  • Persimmons are delicious (and fun to say). I scarfed them down by the dozen when I lived in LA but the good ones are rather hard to find in MN (even in Eden Prairie!). They are ripe when they're a darker orange color - that is when they are at their sweetest and juciest best. The light yellow ones are not ripe. They are dry, and hurty, and have an odd/unpleasant aftertaste. One local place that occasionaly carries persimmons is the Eisenberg Fruit Co d/t St Paul.

  • Hint for your blog this time -- you need to change the link that you go to when you click on Goldy because right now it sends us to the site where it shows today's voting totals - but then we can't vote. You have to link it to a page that hasn't been voted on yet so we can vote for the day... Fix it b*tch
