Movies, Puzzles & Wine, Oh My!

Ever since hearing "Man of Constant Sorrow" about 4 years ago, I've wanted to see O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and finally accomplished this feat just yesterday. I'm pretty much in agreement with its 78% tomatometer rating, but I must concede that I was slightly distracted by the aforementioned puzzle. It's done now, but I'm conflicted over what to do with it?

Please bear with me as I attempt to jot down a few tasting notes from last night's wine...

2003 Three Thieves California Zinfandel (13.9%) $10 for 1L
Light ruby color, dark berries & slight spice nose, rather fruity but balanced - Susan even thought it was decent.

How Was Your Evening?

Just fine, thanks for asking. We finally watched Beverly Hills Ninja, a going away to CA present from Anna. Not exactly Farley's finest work, but it made me miss him nonetheless.

For any of you Johnsonites out there, I'm willing to bet that I've spent more time with my $1 gift than all of y'all combined...

Muchas Gracias to Mirassou Sauvingion Blanc and South Park episodes #809-812 for keeping me company:

  • As a Johnsonite, I'll place a wager. It is impossible to catch me apart from my 'soap dish.' When I sleep, I keep my phone in it. At dinner, I won't eat from anything but that dish. When I buy things, rather than actually handing money to the cashier, I simply place it in the soap dish and slide it over with one finger. Hell, sometimes I even put soap in it! No puzzle can beat my love for the soap dish.

McBlog Roll

I'm stuck at work over lunch waiting for a system backup to finish, so I warmed up a Sausage McMuffin and started probing my RSS feeds. As much as I love Live Bookmarks in Firefox, it's annoying that I have to set them up on two computers or use the portable version and give up Cookies & History. del.icio.us is a decent way to make your bookmarks available from any computer, but RSS feeds are a little more high maintenance...

So I'm going for a ride on NewsGator, which allows me to access a single list of RSS feeds from any location. Not as sexy as the menu interface in Firefox, but so far I think I'm gonna like it. Hopefully you didn't already notice that the "Other" Blogs list to the right grew exponentially, but check it out - that blogroll is an automated script that NewsGator provides.

If I like something enough to NewsGator it, it will automatically show up there and you can learn to like all the things that I like!

Yawn

Here's another dose of "3 month old breaking news" on The Myth...

While reading a rather insightful article called Why There's No Escaping the Blog on Fortune.com, I learned about how blogs affected the Kryptonite Lock company - to the tune of $10 million dollars. Short version: you can unlock those U-shaped locks with a Bic pen.

Oh and by the way, that is 40% OF THEIR ANNUAL REVENUES. It's enough to make any executive cry...

It's Over!

I needed Isaac Bruce + 15, I got zero. Through a series of unfortunate events, my first shot at fantasy football greatness is over. My only consolation is that the Rams won and the Vikes aren't in the playoffs - yet. I wonder if lots of other MNF viewers enjoy Sushi with their John Madden?

Why is it that I can't help but watch CSI: Miami whenever I'm in the same room as it? Without fail, I spend most of the episode shaking my head in disapproval at David Caruso's overacting.

I tasted 3 Lodi Cabernets this afternoon at the Lodi Wine & Visitor Center - did you know that Cabernet Sauvingion is a hybrid of the Sauvingion Blanc and Cabernet Franc grapes? I didn't.

The 2002 Celestial Cellars was far to tannic for my tastes, while the 2001 Six Hands Winery was fruit forward and enjoyable. The 2001 Mettler Family Vineyards was by far the best of the three, chocolatetastic and coffee-riffic.

I was disheartened to learn that my family decided to visit the Prime Quarter the day after I left, but somehow got over it thanks to a BOGO Pannido coupon from the good folks at Jack in the Box. I fear this may be lost on my legions of midwest followers, but for future reference...

...the Lodi Flamers are currently embroiled in a heated battle with Your Mom, and look to make up a 14 point deficit on Monday Night Football for a berth in their first ever Fantasy Bowl. Here's to Brian Westbook and Torry Holt combining for at least 15 more points than Isaac Bruce.

I've recently returned from spelunking in the wine blogosphere, after the brothers Johnson shot down my proposal to rename The Myth to "Whine" last night. It wasn't until I read this post that I realized Huge Johnson is not quite the same guy who wrote the cryptic wine guide on our bar at home...

iBlog

I don't think I've ever posted from a Mac before, but surfin' with Safari is a somewhat familiar experience due to the tabbed-ness of Firefox that I have come to know & love. Nobody else has shown much interest in the botttle of Cab/Merlot Rose I bought yesterday, so I'm being forced to slowly work through it on my own. Oh darn.

We saw Meet the Fockers and Ocean's 12 last night - the former of which I found to be more enjoyable than it's predecessor, while the latter was truly a "phoned in" performance. Speaking of which, I have 6 new Gmail invites for any of you who so desire - I just need your e-mail address to send one.

My brothers both arrived at home this morning without serious incident, and we had a grand 'ol time battling the holiday shopping crowds in the afternoon. I'm sure glad I waited to hit up the dollar store until those two could join me - they almost got booted for playing hockey with shoe shine pucks...

I made it to my super bowl and I will be playing my brother! Already won $210, winning next week will add another $210. Had a great week last week. Culpepper (400yds, 3td's) Jerry Porter (140yds, 3td's) Curtis martin (100 yds 2td's) and mushin muhhammad (130 yds, 1TD). Hopefully Culpepper will be able to blow up on that green and yellow team this weekend.

Running Backwards

It's the name of a team in our fantasy football league, but now exists in reality. The neighbors across the street appear to be watching TiVo'd Packer football - in reverse.

Why would you want to watch that game in any direction?

  • I take back everything good I've ever said about you. First you call my Colts the flamers, and now it is clear to me that you're another delusional Packers fan.

Your team might not even win their division - a division consisting of 5-9 Chicago, 5-9 Detroit, and 8-6 Detroit. The Colts are undefeated vs. NFC teams, while the Packers lost their last game against a team from Florida on the frozen mythical holy magic sacred overrated tundra of Lambeau Field. Need I even mention the Bears @ Lambeau? Perhaps the Giants @ Lambeau? The Titans @ Lambeau? How about the wonderful game in Philly. I can't remember what happened in Indianapolis (even though I was there wearing Blue and White).

Good Luck on Christmas Eve :)

Chatting With 12 Year Old Boys

Rewind to a week and a half ago, my new watch had just arrived and I was all over the SPOTstop.com forums trying to figure out how it was going to handle my upcoming weekend in Arizona. The only person to reply to my discussion board posts was Kas, an "evangelist" who averages 7.36 posts per day (2060 and counting), and I noticed he shared his MSN Messenger contact info...

I put him on my buddy list to ask a follow-up question, and soon learned that he was a 12 year old kid from Toronto. This immediately creeped me out, and not because he was a wacky Canadian. We've chatted a few times since then, and this morning I made a comment that immediately triggered the "MUST BLOG NOW" portion of my brain.

but i can't imagine not having a computer sitting under my desk at home

Not exactly profound, but I realized how dated that thought could become in the not-too-distant future and wanted to capture it for posterity. He was asking me if I had a laptop, and my argument was that it is a nice compliment to a desktop PC at home but far from a replacement.

Anyways, he's working on a website at beyond-spot.com, check it out yo.

Delusional

3 hours of sleep in the last 36 hours, maybe I'm hallucinating about the football scores today? As long as Mr. Manning doesn't throw 17 interceptions in the 4th quarter, the Flamers will prevail and move on to the fantasy playoff semifinals - against a team that will likely be without mighty T.O. <insert eyebrow raise here>

I'm "testing" out my 3rd T-Mobile HotSpot trial as a means of killing time at SFO airport Gate 31, our flight isn't scheduled to leave for another hour. In case you were wondering, the Lodi Flamers won their first playoff game last week and now face the Crazy Scandinavians. We're down 26-10 after a few Saturday games, but I'm confident that Peyton & co. will pull it out for me.

Midwest Jazz RepresentaSHON

I'm from Wisconsin. Susan is from Minnesota. Grammy-nominated The Bad Plus hails from these two great states, and their cover of Iron Man is sah-weet. I must credit my knowledge of their existence to a good friend from high school, whom I recently reconnected with at a bar in Dinkytown - what up Sean.

Since writing that first paragraph, I've LiveBookmarked an RSS feed from the Minnesota Daily and complained to the Star Tribune after scouring their website for one and coming up empty-handed. I'm all about the syndication, which brought my attention to a recent post by my cousin about Google Print. Being that I tend to embrace anything associated with the Google brand, it was enlightening to read some very valid points to the contrary...

As a side note, I'm a little concerned that my own mother assumes that I must be dead if regular posts aren't appearing on The Myth...

MSN has recently unveiled a slew of new stuff that you may or may not actually care about...

MSN Direct has been around for about a year, but I only recently invested $30 into the FM-based technology. Early reviews are mostly positive, and Susan "Dark Ash Brown" Larson is the only woman who hasn't complimented me on it so far ;)

Devil Made Me Do It

After some illegal driving and getting lost on the ASU campus, we finally made it to Cereality for breakfast this morning. The concoction I had was so good, I named this post after it...

  • 12 oz. Cocoa Puffs
  • 12 oz. Lucky Charms
  • 2 generous scoops of chocolate milk crystals
  • 4 generous scoops of malted milk balls
  • 12 seconds of milk from the machine

Susan's was also delectable, but doesn't get further recognition due to the presence of some non-approved cereal. We headed north in the brand new Dodge Neon, stopping at Montezuma's Castle en route to Sedona, AZ. We spent the day checking out all the beautiful scenery and doing a little shopping, and then crashed the Festival of Lights at Tlaquepaque.

I was baffled when the rental car key chain had a grocery store VIP card on it, but I can't complain about the $4.58 it saved me on tonight's wine-and-soy-based-snacks run. I better get back upstairs before said wine gets warm!

  • Okay, the malted milk balls put me over the edge. I'm thoroughly disgusted!! How could you function on that breakfast? And I'm not saying this as a mom like : "You need a nutritious breakfast" because I had Reese's Puffs (approved?), but Cocoa Puffs mixed with Lucky Charms?? And I don't even want to know what chocolate milk crystals are....they make me think of Folger's crystals which, no matter what the commercials say, can not pass for coffee from the best restarants. And then, as I said.....malted milk balls. BARF!!!!!!! Can't stand the things.....and you put them on your cereal??? You've imprinted this awful concoction on my brain and I'm completely scarred!!

Okay I'm done. Need to go get a lobotomy now so my life can go on!

  • I will not follow the "can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" because I'd end up being very quiet. So how the hell did you know about this Cereality place anyway? I'm hoping that it's b/c of work because if you just found this on your own you're a big loser.

BlogThis! - Peyton the Stud

This is my first year doing the fantasy football thing, and with each passing week I find myself slightly more "into" it. That's probably because of good 'ol Peyton Manning, who is apparently the greatest fantasy footballer alive.

The Lodi Flamers head into the playoffs with an 8-5 record, missing a first round bye on a head-to-head tiebreaker. Stay tuned for more riveting details!

mjohn058: do you get many magazines?

bradleypjohnson: quite

I've alluded to it before, but there is a plethora of reading material floating around this place. I bal33t it was Laura who first enticed me to check out Half.com, and the rest is history. I've unloaded $1,114.08 worth of moichandice on said e-commerce site since 9/1/02, and bought enough goodies to earn me an impressive list of subscripSHONs...

  • Wine Spectator
  • Kiplinger's Personal Finance
  • GQ
  • US News & World Report
  • FHM
  • Real Simple
  • Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel
  • US Weekly
  • Men's Health
  • Blender
  • Rolling Stone
  • TV Guide
  • Wired
  • Business 2.0
  • Wine Enthusiast
  • Ski
  • Golf Digest
  • Maxim

Of course, there's a catch - if you forget to call and cancel on time you get charged something like forty times the cover price. If you do remember, they usually act surprised and offer to extend the trial for 12 months for a measly $1 processing fee. Of course then you have to remember to cancel again in a year, but isn't that why Microsoft invented Outlook?

mjohn058: (holy shit do you get a lot of magazines)

Brad, the "Educated" Voter

I seriously just learned what stem cells are... from South Park episode #513. It might be the most irreverent show I've ever seen, but it makes me laugh nonetheless.

I shipped Susan off to Phoenix tonight, but it won't be long before I go visit for the weekend. I'm looking forward to the weather...

...and seeing her too, I suppose.

I promise to love you forever if you have an answer to either of the two burning questions currently in my head:

Why does airport security scrutinize one way passengers more than round trip ticketholders? Can't the bad guys afford to buy half a ticket they won't use?

Why does the car stereo in my 2003 Mazda 6i lack a pause button? Didn't anyone think that was an important feature?

Sorry, I promised two questions not four - I'm a liar.

Seven And Five

Apparently wearing my Packers hat while snowboarding yesterday wasn't good luck, but da Bears beat da Vikes again today so I guess it's OK. We got up early yesterday and drove to Pinecrest for a day of fun in the snow at Dodge Ridge "the closest snow to home" with the good folks from Susan's office. Good times were had by most, even though I banged my knee pretty good - on the flattest part of the whole mountain oh by the way.

The whole group had dinner at the Strawberry Inn, which was picked not for it's culinary merits so much as being the only dining establishment within 25 miles. They ran out of steak halfway through ordering, but miraculously had steak for the "roast beef" fajitas. My "burger of distinction" seemed distinctly overdone, but I could have just been distrcted by the vacumming in the next room?

We spent the evening playing some Texas hold 'em, but apparently the fact that the chips had my initials on them did not mean that I was destined to win. Now I have to go back to work and earn my money like my momma taught me to...

It's just been pronounced Merriam-Webster's word of the year for 2004.

The font size for each subject increases as more people enter/click on it. I wasn't too surprised to notice one of the items was "stop relying on Google for facts," so I agreed.

It is for this exact reason that I had never experienced MSN maps & directions. photoblox?

Presurfer told DK to tell me to put a blogblox on my page, hence the thingie over on the right.

  • Hotness.

Just remember to add a new pic every once in a while.

  • Distracting. Besides, the Ken Burns Effect doesn't always show you the good part of the image... cropping off people's heads and such. Additionally, it significantly increases the load time and refresh rate of your blog...

...And when I want The Myth, I WANT IT NOW!

24 Hour Funness

...watched KenJen finally drop the ball at the gym tonight. Other highlights included just barely bench pressing 115 pounds for 3 sets of 8 reps - I am such a wimp!

As I was finishing up on the elliptical machine, I became increasingly aware of a horrendous odor. Although I never figured out who (me?) it was coming from, I did find it ironic enough to share that myPod was belting out Black Eyed Peas' "Smells Like Funk" at the time...
