Zintastic

Yesterday was the end of the Annual ZAP Festival at Fort Mason in nearby Sanny Franny. I didn't go, but did search this "best of" list for Lodi wines, and was surprised by the results. The absence of Earthquake Zin made me sad, as it's my current Lodi #1 - but my attention was drawn to wines from locals Borra and Klinker Brick, and another Lodi sourced Zin from The Getto.

I attempted to pair another Zin with dinner tonight, but the peppery nose on the 2003 Windmill Estate Lodi Old Vine Zinfandel wasn't a very good indicator of the chocolatey/vanillaish flavors that didn't exactly bring out the best in our overcooked crock pot chili...

Stingy Starbucks?

I knew this story wasn't true as soon as I read about it, since my experience with Starbucks is that they are one of the most generous companies I've ever encountered. They're even sponsoring my entertainment next Saturday!

Damn Laptop Battery...

...let's try again.

Last night's entertainment was a "Casino Night" put on by the folks at Enterprise as a United Way fundraiser. Similar to AKPsi events hosted at now defunct Minnesota Brewing Co, the goal is to win table games to earn raffle tickets for a big prize drawing. I was annoyed by dealers that didn't know blackjack rules and constantly cheated (in our favor) - "A Scout is Trustworthy" must have sunk in at some point. Susan insisted that I should "Enjoy Life," and it turned out that we didn't win nearly as many tickets as others did. I ended up with a 75" wasp kite (complete with creepy spinning eyes), but the grand prize went to a woman at our table who probably didn't even know what TiVo is.

Watched Napoleon Dynamite and Tad Hamilton, gave Pekoe a bath, and helped Tony pick a new digital camera - I love lazy Saturdays at home...

The "Other" Simpsons

I read a blog post about it the other day, and just caught it on MTV - Nick & Jessica do Napa Valley. Domaine Chandon got some big exposure - where Jessica was wondering,

Don't you think they make Champagne in Italy?

How did they make wine in Jesus times?

Paul & Pam belong to the club there, but I've never been. I wonder if they let "ordinary people" pick & stop their own grapes at St. Supery? I thought it was pronounced su-perry, but apparently super-e is the proper way to git 'er done.

It also appears their dog Daisy is at least part Lhaso (as if I'm an expert), and the previews for the next episode feature some familiar footage from my trip to the dentist this past week...

Pekoe Boo

Susan and the 'ol Tea Bag are passed out downstairs... hmm, must be 9:30? Yep.

Well I've gotten enough guff about it, so here they are - pictures of the puppy I actually took. 28 pictures and 4 videos are probably more than you wanted, but I had to whittle it down from 285 so give me a break. And you wonder what took me so long? I was taking the damn pictures!

What else is new... I'm currently trying to finish a bottle of 2001 Grove Street Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, which was somewhat offensive when I opened it on Tuesday but seems to be improving. It has a strong black licorice nose, a little chewy in the mouth and a short cherry finish. Too much alcohol (14%) for me, but for $11 I'm not going to complain.

Holy poop, I just remembered that I gave blood earlier tonight, and am not supposed to drink alcohol until after "a hearty meal." I wonder if 4 Grandma's cookies (at 200 calories each) and some cous cous counts? I can definitely feel it after just a few sips.

We cooked with 1/4 cup and drank the balance of a 2004 Brancott Marlborough Sauvingion Blanc last night, which Susan initially described as "not the best" and then proceeded to take down three glasses of. We both identified pear and peach aromas, but quite honestly I don't remember anything else. It was OK for a Target wine, but I was hoping to let it sit for a few more months

  • Bout time! Although I have to say. You need to be careful where you're leaving this 14% alcohol wine around. There were a few shots that the little tea bag looked half in the bag. I would hate for Child Services to have to make a visit...er, I guess it would be Puppy Services. And another thing, I know you have this whole story about drinking tea and that's how you got the name "Pekoe", but I'm not buying it. A hardcore blogger like you probably had the whole "Pekoe Boo" entry title planned out months ago and naming the dog that was all part of your plan. Seriously though, cute cat.

Las Braindump

A few stories from our trip to Las Vegas...

...we rolled in a black Lexus RX300 and stayed at the incredible Park Towers, courtesy of Tony's uncle...found ourselves at The Bar at Times Square on Friday night, where the dueling pianos insisted on doing a beat box while they played...found a handful of semi-acceptable items on "The Buffet" at "The Nugget" before I lost my wallet...won back some of my losses playing $3 blackjack and craps at Tuscany, where the tables have images of scantily clad women on them...and ran into an attention-hungry Troy from Apprentice Season 1 at the Bellagio (he waved us over).

Sorry Dad and Heff - I know this wasn't about Pekoe, but I had to get it out of my head before I forgot. I've taken oodles of pictures of him, and will be sharing more soon. For now, I need to clean up the puddle he just left on the carpet...

  • What's with this new dog phenomenon? You are now the fourth friend of mine to purchase a dog. Not to mention, the third to get one out of wedlock. That seems like a big commitment. Muck/Erin, John/Katie and now you two. What if things don't work out? Do you split the dog in half or just send it to a local restaurant to be added in the chow mein?

OK. Enough with the sillyness. Congrats on the new mutt. Keep him away from the Cheerios and Peanut Butter.

  • Bradley's Aunt MaryEllen Comments:

Are you crazy? Do you remember Zacarie, thier (former) dog? David wanted a dog, both of them worked all day so the dog had to be locked up. Put him out side and he barked all day, neighbors complained, so they kept him locked up all day inside. He became an angry dog and about 6 months later he bit MaryEllen on the hand. That was the end of Zacarie. Good luck with you new dog! He sure is cute.

Enjoy Life

...feeding myself leftovers for lunch with a spork today - brings me back to the days of hot- and cold-pack school lunches (also known as the first and last time I ever ate a corn dog).

I spent my lunch helping Vogtman design this year's UP snowboarding trip sweatshirt logo, so I'll spare the Sin City details until I can get some pictures uploaded...

  • I am very fond of corndogs and take offense to your comments making the grand food that is "the corn dog" as something that is not to be desired. In preparation for my thesis class tonight (seeing as I am now pretending to be smart and attending grad school) I have decided to grace you with a few bits of info on the great food that is known as the corn dog.
-Corn dogs were created in 1942 by Neil Fletcher.
-Mr. Fletcher made said corn dogs for the Texas State Fair.
-National Corn Dog Day is always the first Saturday of the NCAA basketball tourney (so you can obviously enjoy that wonderful treat while watching 48 basketball games at the same time).
I would write more but I just realized I am now late for my night class.

Gallo Gallo Bo Ballo

The LA Times has a rare interview with Joe Gallo today. Susan's friend actually works there, but we haven't hit him up for any discount wine - yet. This sounds like my dream joarb - designing a computer program that plots Pinot Noir flavor profiles against the world's Pinot producers, visually telling you what combinaSHONs scored highest with consumers.

Derek's into wine marketing as a potential new career - he could have plenty of fun inventing new wine brands that become 1+ million case shipments seemingly overnight. Maybe you should come back to CA for some more "research"?

Not Keen on Tower

My first trip into Tower Records is likely to be my last - they had 35,000 albums on sale for $9.99 through tonight, including Keane's new one. Listed as $9.99 online, it rang up as $12.99 in the store. The cashier didn't seem to realize that most of the store was currently on sale. Whatever.

As a result, I'm in the process of buying my first complete album from iTunes - kind of a weird feeling, since I won't be able to turn around and sell it for most of it's value on Half.com. Um, I hope the RIAA doesn't read The Myth...

I'm A Very Sad Guy

On the way home from dinner in Old Sacramento tonight, a cat ran out in front of our car and I hit it - twice. That was horrible enough, but I will never forget looking in the side view mirror to see it writhing around, the reflection of my brakelights in its eyes. I couldn't bring myself to go back and make sure it was dead, I just sat and felt helpless before resigning to myself that nothing could be done and proceeding home...

It happened in a fairly deserted area, so I'm praying that there isn't a family out looking for their kitty as I write this. I get sick every time I think about it - cats are the only pet I've ever had, and I would be devastated if something like this had happened to Tiger. If Bailey or Matisse are reading this - stay out of the damn road!

It was a sad ending to an otherwise great weekend - more on that in the AM.

  • Laura, I too, hit a rabbit in HS. After hearing its head clunk underneath my truck, I saw it wiggling helplessly in the middle of the street. My friend forced me to turn around and drive over its head to put it out of its misery. It's never a fun ordeal.

Talk About Delicious...

Carlson School Graduate Business Career Center Director Clare Foley has a message for aspiring graduate students such as myself...
Don't Look at the Hot MBA Jobs

At the risk of having an opinion, I wasn't a big fan of a leadership program she described that examines students' strengths & weaknesses and attempts to balance them. I've somewhat recently adopted the belief that unless one exhibits a catastrophic weakness (such as my inability to get out of bed in time for 8 AM meetings), one should focus on their top few strengths and develop them to the point that they differentiate one from "the pack."

PS: Business Week classifies The Carlson MBA as a "second tier" (top 30-50) program.

yum.

I don't care if it's only 22% fresh, I really enjoyed Wicker Park. Oh look, now it's 8 PM and I haven't exactly accomplished anything tonight. Unless you count going through a week's worth of mail. Which I don't.

Michael's post about capturing every day of your life in a photo was inspiring, and the four thousand and ninety fourth picture taken with my Canon Powershot A60 (below) is my first attempt. Taken from my lap on the way home from work today, note the wonderful cold sore I'm recovering from.

Free* BlackBerry

Since I'm currently driving around in an Impala rented from Avis, I am eligible for a free BlackBerry - yippie!

*The catch is that it will cost me $25.83/month for 12 months minimum to try it out, which is slightly more than I've invested in my SPOT watch and PDA combined. • I, for one, welcome our Blackberry overlords. I think that the deal is totally worth it. It's not like you have a special Batman watch that tells time, sports scores, movie times, weather and works really well when snowboarding during the Vikings game! Enjoy Life and Deez.

  • I vote no on the Blackberry. I'll guess that's about 1/2 your cell phone bill - you really think that's necessary? If you're a CEO or Wall Street bigwig, you need a Blackberry. The rest of us don't. Plus, you can access your email on your phone w/ pull rather than push technology if it's that important to access your email when you're away from your laptop. Which, in your case, is rarely. Vote is now at 1-1. Who else will vote?

  • I just don't get how $25.83 a month is free. ANYWAY....that's just me!

  • What if you already have a cell phone. Is it possible to just extend your contact for another year and get the free blackberry??

Embarrass, MN

I'd like to thank the guy who printed out "Storm dumps snow, ice across several states" from MSNBC.com and left a copy in the handicapped stall of a nearby restroom. Not because I was particularly interested in how thick the layer of ice on power lines in Kansas City is, but I did discover that Minnesota apparently has named a town after the Vikings...

  • Haha...very funny. I agree the Vikings are an embarassment. And Randy Moss is a spoiled brat. I still hope they win, but my outlook is quite negative.

I bet you miss all that nice cold snow living out there in Cali. Don't deny it!

  • From the MSNBC article - Anne Panzica, 27, never read the memo that you can buy windshield washer fluid at 99% of gas stations. I'm embarassed for a fellow Bostonian sounding so dumb on record (I bet she's from the one of the crappy suburbs and just says she's from Boston).

http://yu.mm.y?

No silly, it's http://del.icio.us.

What is that exactly? Well their about page sums it up nicely...
del.icio.us is a social bookmarks manager. It allows you to easily add sites you like to your personal collection of links, to categorize those sites with keywords, and to share your collection not only between your own browsers and machines, but also with others.

So I've been playing with this service, and decided to join another bandwagon by setting up a linkblog on del.icio.us. Instead of posting every interesting link I find on The Myth, I'll stick it up on the linkblog, so you may want to check it from time to time. A permanent link is available under "Google Food" on the right sidebar.

Bon Appetit!

My Fingers Are Frozen?

Boy, do I turn into a blogging slacker once I show up in this city. I don't think I posted one time on my last trip, but yet I somehow find the time to read countless posts on "other" blogs.

I've always had issues with my extremities being cold, so maybe I can blame the lack of typing on chilly fingers. I'm currently trying to revive them by wrapping 'em around a warm 16 oz. Caribou Blend...

Sleeping In Young Boys' Beds

Shockingly, bloggers are all over this story - don't break your arm patting yourself on the back.

I'm looking forward to my first prix fixe experience next weekend.

The holidays have come & gone, and tomorrow brings national "get back to work day" for more than a few of us. I'm in Minneapolis now, and was fortunate enough to spend part of the day riding the glorious man-made snow at Afton Alps. Susan is on her way to Phoenix for another two week training stint, and the Chronicle's website is telling me my account is invalid when trying to stop delivery of the paper.

We had a nice New Year's Eve with some new friends in Modesto, and even got to crash in Spencer's bed - decked out in sweet Scooby Doo sheets. I really need to start pulling my weight when it comes to harvesting friends for Susan and I to hang out with. That's going to have to wait though, since this week is all about hanging out with old friends (oh and work too). Time for bed now though - don't want a repeat performance of the last time I was in town on business, even though 10:30 sounds like a good time to roll out of bed...
