Terrible Times @ Target

Susan asked me to join her on a "Target Run" tonight, which turned out to be a rare disappointing experience...

I was all pumped up to patronize the in-store Starbucks, except they closed 1 minute before we arrived. Not to be deterred, I set out in search of a Sharpie Mini to add to my keychain - only to discover that they were only available in a 4 pack of fugly colors. Strike 2.

The third item on my list was of a bit more necessity than the first two - a strainer for my pee. But did any of the offerings in housewares have a fine enough mesh to catch the tiniest stone my kidneys might throw out? Of course not.

The trip was barely salvaged by a bag of Red Vines and a smelly new t-shirt...

  • As recently new resident of WI---I think I need one of those shirts. Then we could where them together and people could take pictures of us. Talk about fun.....

  • I totally coined that phrase on a T Shirt I designed in my Intro to Design Class (March, 2003) at the U of M. Some PUNK at Target Corp. was probably in my class and is now getting pats on the back all over Target Town for a phrase I THOUGHT UP!! Seriously...

Pits

On the way home from the dog park in Lodi, we stopped at a roadside stand and got a bag each of Bing and Ranier cherries. We paid $3/lb - was that a rip off? Are you supposed to "negotiate" with roadside vendors?

Another Day, Another Movie

After spending the morning sunburning my back while we built a patio in the backyard, Susan and I took the afternoon off for some cinematic distracSHON. About midway through Madagascar, it occurred to me that the movie was written as much for adults as it was animated for the kiddies.

I can't even think of all the examples of stuff that would fly over kids' heads, but references to Regis & Kelly, and Katie/Matt/Al from the Today Show stuck in my mind.

Of course, this isn't the first movie of its kind (Shrek, The Incredibles...) - but what was the first? How did this genre get started? I haven't seen The Lion King or Aladdin in awhile, but I'm pretty sure they weren't packed with kowtows to adult humor...

  • Aladdin is filled with adult jokes. All that crazy stuff Robin Williams does, if you can keep up with it, is stuff that goes over the kids' heads. He keeps morphing into different people and doing impressions of them.

But I would have to say that the old Loony Toons were written with adults in mind as much as kids.

In Good Company

Considering I'm not much of a Topher Grace fan, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie. Not sure if I can say the same for Susan and the dogs - they all slept through most of it but hey what else is new.

Dogs? As in plural? You read it right, we have taken in another puppy for the weekend so his mom can sun herself on a boat somewhere. Pekoe and Rocco have been keeping each other pretty good company, what with all the wrestling and humping and such.

No wonder they were tired tonight...

Susan takes some great pictures with her new camera, stay tuned for a time-lapse series of our backyard patio coming to life!

This one time...

I've got lots of band camp stories, from tame stuff like how warm root beer is the best fuel for a late-night belching contest to more risque like, um... I can't remember.

For some reason, I was reminded that Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the intensive rehearsal season for my high school marching band. I suppose it's technically the marching band for 8th-12th grade students in the Racine Unified School District, not just Horlick...

At any rate, I was saddened to learn that I won't be able to see them perform while I'm back home in June - perhaps I will have to show up at a rehearsal?!?

If I remember correctly, the band will march past the grave of Matt LaBelle after the parade on Monday. Mr. Johnson would tell us a little about his life and unfortunate death at a very young age - I hope Rex still does that. Life goes by way too quickly most of the time, and we need some excuses to stop and think about life, death and everything in between.

A big thanks to B&B Tires and Service for not securing their wireless router and therefore allowing me to blog while they do my alignment. Although my appointment was 15 minutes ago and the car hasn't moved from its parking spot just yet...

While I'm on the subject of businesses in Lodi that I like, Staples should be heralded as a procrastinators' best friend. I bought Susan's camera there 2 days before her birthday for a hurty $430 retail - specifically because they have no restocking fees.

After making sure she loved it, I ordered the same camera online for $340. When it arrived a week later, I returned it to Staples and they were none the wiser. The $90 I pocketed was more than enough to cover a 1 GB SD card to ensure oodles of picture taking fun...

In my opinion, this in no way hurt Staples because they received an untouched camera in return. It did, however, screw the state of CA in favor of UPS - something I am completely OK with. Am I a horrible person?

It's worth noting that this strategy can also be employed for non-procrastinary (probably not actually a word) purposes, if for example you wanted to try something at home before buying it online and dealing with the time and expense of return shipping.

UPDATE: Bret (presumably the greater of the 2 B's) seems like a really honest guy, and I'm totally comfortable with him working on my car - but he just showed me yet another nail in my damn tire! That makes 3 in as many months, you'd think I worked at a construction site or something...

  • Let's talk about the fact that I've been to the Denny's you ate at, and it was certainly better than expected. Mary and I stayed at the Motel 6 in Monterrey (cheapest hotel in the area - about $90 if I remember correctly) and then Denny-ed it up in the morning before traveling to SF. Did you also copy us by driving the 1 up to SF?

To be honest, the Dennys service sucked, but the food definitely hit the spot. Did you have the 15% off keycard ad from Motel 6?

We had fun at Zinfest...

...Drew had a little too much fun.

I'm sure my aunt Mary would be proud to learn that her cucumber sandwiches recipe works nicely as nipples. What's the recipe you say?

4 oz cream cheese
1/4 cup mayo
1/2 package
Good Seasons Italian dressing powder

Mix above ingredients, spread on sliced baguette and top with sliced cucumber and some dillweed - chest of passed out friend is optional.

PS: Do you pronounce your Mother's sister as ANT or OHNT?

Coe Nan

Nearly 2 years ago, Susan and I ran into Conan O'Brien on the streets of NYC - inexplicably holding a "Will Work for Food" sign. This month's Golf Digest had a full page ad for City Harvest that brought it all into perspective...

I realize he isn't wearing the same suit in both pictures, so the ones we saw him taking must have sucked or something. Here he is the night we saw him, holding the telltale sign...

Grateful Brad

I've been working on a bottle of Jerry Garcia Merlot over the past few days, and it seems to be mellowing out nicely as it oxidizes - you should go pick up a bottle, if for no other reason than the pretty art on the labels...

I wonder if Wade & Ali have enjoyed theirs yet? OK so I'm fishing for comments there, but recent comments from long lost high school classmates have me all excited about using my blog to connect and engage with people. Frankly, it's a lot more interesting for me to have a conversation with my readers than just post and hope they keep coming back.

That being said, I read lots of blog posts without commenting so don't feel obligated or anything...

Anyway, up pooped this blog and I was like, "Holy Crap. I think I used to give that kid wedgies in the 2nd Gradergarten!" Anyway, I'm doing well. I'm living with my Cousin and his baby's Momma in Stockton, CA. It would be cool to see you some time but I know it's a long trip from Wisconsin. If only you lived a little closer. Anyway, hope all is well. Say hello to that girlfriend you couldn't stop talking about back in high school.

Uno, Dos, Tres, Catorce

I'm finding that swimming laps is a nice change from the usual cardio routine of treadmill/elliptical machines. Since this necessitates use of the locker room (and therefore lots of old man nudity), Susan picked up a combo lock for me today.

Lo and behold - the last two numbers are the month and day of my mom's birth. At first I was surprised, but after thinking about it for a minute I wonder if I could "relate" to any two numbers that same way? For all I know, the lock she didn't buy could have matched my SSN, shirt size, who knows...

Speaking of my mom, Happy 29th (right?) Anniversary!

  • I assumed that Liz found out about my blog through the Martha > Jake grapevine, how about you Shawn?

By Blogger Shawn P., at 5/17/2005 9:06 PM

  • Do you still talk to Martha? How did you find her blog?

By Blogger Brad, at 5/18/2005 12:34 AM

  • I haven't been in touch with you or Martha since High school. But I recently felt like looking up people I used to know. I thought of the both of you, but reasoned her name would be easier to Google. It took me to some page with a link to her blog. And there you have it.

I left a similar comment on her site, but she doesn't seem to be as faithful a blogger as some, so she probably doesn't know that I've been there.

Masked Greed?

It's becoming pretty clear that me (the technophile) buying Susan a supa fly digital camera for her birthday may seem like a vaguely disguised attempt to "hook myself up." I would just like to proactively mention that this is her camera, and by no means a replacement for my beloved (and now apparently discontinued) A60.

Will I use Susan's new camera? Of course I will - just like she used mine for the past 2 years. I took the picture below about 10 minutes ago using my own camera - even though the SD400 is sitting on the coffee table downstairs. And that was before Michael made a comment and I realized I needed to defend myself.

PS - if you can identify the newest stickers on my guitar case, then you probably also preordered the new DMB CD...

I Give Up

After spending over an hour preparing each of the last two dinners only to have them turn out shitty, I quit.

The only highlight of cooking 4 red onions for a half hour was the fact that 1) the Tablet was there to distract me, and 2) AOL webcast a live Dave Matthews Band concert from NYC.

Their new studio album, titled Stand Up, hits stores tomorrow.

Zintastic

On a normal day, I would just now be leaving the house - but today is special. I had to get to the Lodi Wine & Visitor Center before 7 to earn a free ticket to Zinfest next weekend. Since you can only get one per person, I "recruited" some "friends" and now have 4 ($80 value) tucked away in a safe place.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find a bag of Starbucks Caffe Verona attached to this morning's paper - I guess when it rains, it pours. Maybe I should get up early more often? I guess I just need some incentive to peel my ass out of bed in the morning.

Good thing Cinco de Mayo was yesterday, so we could get the Coronas out of the way for the week. Tomorrow will be another early morning, since the Sacramento Race for the Cure Non-Timed 5K Run/Walk starts promptly at 8:05 AM...

This past weekend, I discovered that Pekoe suffers from the same hypersensitive "licking zone" as our late pet cat Tiger did. Simply scratch the area marked with the red X, and feel bad because he can't help but keep on lickin'

Once again,

I find myself sitting outside of Borders with Pekoe while Susan shops at Target - except it isn't raining this time. I hope she's buying herself a birthday present in there, cuz I'm a bit short on ideas so far... maybe a matching bike?

I watched some Animation Domination last night, and am really glad that Fox brought Family Guy back. Speaking of high-larious animated comedies, there was an interesting NY Times article about South Park today, although I do wish they would make the articles a bit more concise. That would probably compromise the quality, so maybe I'll just have to learn to read faster and/or poop slower.

If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend subscribing to NYT's "most emailed articles" feed and printing one off before your next visit to the can...

  • Animation Domination kicked ass. I found myself wasting hours of my time on sunday night watching cartoons and although I had a lot of homework to get done I felt I was justified watching those programs--that is until American Dad came on. Perhaps it was the high quality of the Simpsons and the Family Guy leading up to American Dad, but I was not impressed.

Angry

I keep trying to put into words how Control Room just pissed me off about the media and our government, but I can't seem to form coherent sentences.

If you've got 86 minutes to spare and forgot about all the shit that went down in Iraq a couple years ago, check it out.
