There has been some frustration vented about lack of updates, I've been entertaining a visitor from the deep south and will be back soon.

And now you've been updated.

  • This is probably inappropriate b/c your mom reads your blog, but when you say you are "entertaining a visitor from the deep south", and I don't know that you have a friend visiting from the South, I'm confused and think you have an STD that is keeping you busy and unable to blog.

Inc.

I read 2 noteworthy articles in the July 2005 (wow I'm behind) issue of Inc. magazine...

Stephen Gass invented a table saw that stops instantly when it touches flesh - back in 2001. 32,000 people are rushed to emergency rooms with table-saw related injuries each year in the US, but the industry refuses to adopt his SawStop technology?

Read why David Slawson says that "A solar farm 100 miles by 100 miles would be enough to displace the fossil-fuel consumption of the U.S."

  • Perhaps the reason why the industry has not adapted this new table saw is for the better of mankind. Have you ever heard of the term social Darwinism? I think they should make the saw blades sharper.

I think I know you and I concur that you are witty. You should have your own witty blog we could read all the time.

  • I'm not sure where the right place to comment on your bloglink is but I'm doing it here. Don't get down on your fam for signing you up for more years with Sprint without asking you... Regarding the Treo: Windows was made for computers, and had to be scaled back to work on a mobile phone. On the other hand, Symbian was developed specifically for a mobile environmnet and thus is a better OS than Windows on your phone. There are lots Symbian phones that will sync with Outlook - that aren't the Treo.

I Hate Football

  • The Packers lost (again)
  • The Vikings won
  • My ESPN fantasy team lost despite scoring 150.20000000000002 points
  • Yahoo won't display fantasy points earned on Sunday unless I pay $10???

I am, however, stoked that the Gophers beat Purdue - I predict we'll be ranked #18.

  • Sorry about your fantasy team. I've started out strong again this year, 3-0 and all alone in 1st place. And my Packer prediction for the year, Favre will not be the starting QB at the end of the year! BYE BYE BRET!

Blatant Promotion

I can't belive I'm peddling a credit card, but I've been using the Chase Cash Plus Rewards Visa for a few months and think it's a pretty good deal. I saw an ad in The Chronicle today that's even sweeter...

  • $100 cash back bonus after first purchase
  • 5% cash back on gas, grocery & pharmacy purchases
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • No annual fee
  • 0% intro APR for the first 12 months
  • 888-787-0329 code HG1 (no incentive for me here)

Plus, the card looks like it's fake.

I Heart Pricegrabber

I don't know what I'd do without Pricegrabber - spend more money, that's for sure. I just got a card and cable to connect the aforementioned video camera to my computer for $32, which would have cost me over $75 from Best Buy.

By the way, what's with Geek Squad-branded computer accessories? I remember the good old days when they were one of Technically Speaking's competitors...

Yawn

Pekoe is understandably worn out - his first training class was tonight at Petsmart (yes, he pooped in the store again). We met Rocco and Pugsley, as well as Shauna the instructor who is "having a rough day... and year" and "can make dogs so excited they pee." Yep, she was a character.

Enough about the dog already - I won both of my fantasy football games this week (both teams earned 130 points in 2 different leagues, weird). Now I'm somewhat motivated to put some effort into the whole thing and try and win back some of my combined $30 investment.

Man, I was so ready to rag on Culpepper for sucking it up Sunday, and then the Packers lost. Again. Maybe da Bears will win the NFC North? I know a couple people who would be stoked.

I guess a bunch of shows premiered tonight, but I was pretty content with an hour of syndicated Family Guy and a Daily Show rerun...

Click Your Heels

2 quick hits before we start watching Wedding Date...

With my birthday less than a month away, people have started asking me "what I want." True to my GTD roots, I've been keeping a "wishlist" category in Outlook for tracking just such things - but that isn't exactly the easiest way to share said information. So I created a Backpack instead, and plan to maintain that for future reference.

Have I mentioned Amabuddy before? It's a cool service that allows you to call a phone number (617-712-3574) and enter a UPC/ISBN to find out how much a book/CD/DVD costs on Amazon. I've used it a few times, and it's starting to shape up into a nice "stuff you can find at Borders" wishlist.

*Note that I will use both of these services as if nobody else is looking at them, so they might not exactly be "edited"...

Sad State of Affairs

I cried a little bit when I read that the Racine County Historical Museum (which apparently used to be the Public Library) might close due to lack of funding. I did my Eagle Scout service project there back in the winter of 1997/98, renovating the northwest gallery with the help of dozens of scouts and parents from Troop 161.

I've never been much of a history guy myself, but I doesn't 6 years of increasing attendance, memberships & contributions say something?

PS The Journal Times has funny headlines.

Wine-o

If my memory serves me correctly, we conquered the following Napa Valley wineries on Sunday...

  • Domaine Chandon - where were Nick & Jessica?
  • Cakebread - highly recommended both for the wine and tour/tasting.
  • V Sattui, AKA Barnum & Bailey's winery & deli
  • Heitz, where the service was more pretentious than the wine.
  • Clos Pegase - that's "Klo Pehgaas" mister, very artsy fartsy.
  • Frank Family - home of American champagne and warm Chardonnay.

For the record, we spent the previous Sunday in wine country too.

  • Peju
  • Sutter Home
  • Ravenswood
  • Viansa

DCI on ESPN2, thanks TPT

It must have been about 2 years ago that I e-mailed Twin Cities Public Television to inquire about whether or not they would be showing the Drum Corps International Finals. Not sure if they ever replied, but imagine my surprise to get an e-mail from them today...
Dear Viewer,

Twin Cities Public Television was not able to obtain the rights to broadcast the Drum Corp. International Finals this year. However, we wanted to make sure that you know it will be broadcast on ESPN 2 on Tuesday September 6th at 9:00 PM. We hope you have a chance to enjoy the show!

I always said that being in the University of Minnesota Marching Band was one of the most athetic things I've ever done in my life. Apparently it can be considered a "sport" (poker anyone?) and therefore broadcast on ESPN...
