can someone please explain how the 1 inch blade on a corkscrew (banned) is less dangerous than a 4 inch scissor blade (allowed)?

Our First Guests

Congratulations to Tony & Krista, who got engaged on Thursday night! They (along with Nick & Shadi) were our first house "guests," even though the place is in no shape to be seen by the general public. Since we don't have anything covering most of the windows, pretty much anyone could window shop freely - but I don't think the neighbors have seen us prancing around naked yet...

Unpacking is progressing slowly but surely - I got the TiVo hooked up this morning, so Susan won't even miss me while I'm galfing in 50-60 degree Myrtle Beach weather next week. Time to go spend some more of the corporate relocation card buring a hole in our pockets...

I've been preaching RSS and aggregators for some time now, so it's somewhat counterintuitive that I'm about to suggest an alternative for those of you who can't seem to make the leap. Since everyone uses e-mail and it's silly to visit my blog site on a daily (or hourly) basis to see if I've posted, why not get an e-mail whenever I actually do?

Three's A Crowd

Sarah, Susan and I had a Menage a Trois tonight, and we all enjoyed it quite thoroughly. It was the first time any of us had tried it, but the consensus was that we should definitely try some more as soon as possible.

Of course this is all Hilary's fault, since she got us a sweet gift basket last week when we closed on the house (apparently she gets a commission for being our agent?). I can't wait to try the vodka pasta sauce...

"Safely" Home Again

I didn't go to high school with Vogtman & Co., but for the last 4 years they've let me accompany them on a long weekend snowboarding trip to the UP. We made it back this afternoon, but not before Paske fractured his right fibula doing a sweet 720 reverse backside flip*. I'm a little banged up myself, but should be ready for the 3rd annual Myrtle Beach golf marathon in 6 days.

Susan spent the weekend unpacking lots of our stuff at the new house, with lots of help from Nathan the 6 day old wünderkind (and apparently a few adults too). I've got to go find a box with some pants that fit for my "first day" of work tomorrow...

  • My memories of driving through Wyoming consist of cycling between two cassette tapes: GNR's "Appetite for Desctruction" and Spinal Tap's "This is Spinal Tap". A couple hours later I decided that road and engine noise wasn't so bad after all.

Rebecca is being induced today, so hopefully she'll give birth to a little cupid complete with wings and bow & arrow, etc - except that might hurt a bit on the way out?

Today is also my last day at work before Pekoe and I start the long journey back, I Google Mapped all the Motel 6's along the way since they are pet friendly (and also quite posh). If I can remember how to post using my phone, I'll try and thumb out a couple updates during the trip. See you in MN soon!

Snow & Sun

Back from a successful weekend in the Lake Tahoe area, my shoulder mysteriously hurts but should be ready to go for next weekend in the UP. Pretty sure I'm going to experience climate shock though, since it was too hot today to ride in more than a long sleeved shirt.

The current forecast for next Saturday in Ironwood, MI? 9°

Tomorrow we're taking a limo to Napa which should be good times, can't drink too much though since I need to get back to the house and make it "broom clean" - does anyone know what that actually means?

High Speed Internet Please

Today is moving day - I feel a little bad sitting around while these guys haul our stuff out, but I guess that's what we hired them for...

I'm shopping for an ISP for our new house and Time Warner's Road Runner site advertises a premium subscription service to NASCAR.COM as "Your All Access Pass to the Greatest Sport on Earth!"

I beg to differ - apparently they haven't heard of beer pong.

Does anyone in MN have broadband internet through someone other than Road Runner?

  • Yes, go with whoever your cable is with... but, go to Best Buy to sign up for cable - you get better deals than the cable co offers for some reason... Or, check with Worldperks Mall because they offer miles for Earthlink DSL which is apparently the same as Time Warner? But you can't do Best Buy AND Worldperks so check them and pick one...

  • Comcast has a deal for $20 a month for the first three months. Derek coaxed me into getting it at our house. I'm sure it will go up to $100 a month after the first three when they add all their ridiculous fees and bs charges.

Unser Haus Wird Verpackt

"You've got a lot of shit for a little house"

That about sums up the feelings of the 3 guys who spent nearly 6 hours packing all our [expletive deleted] into 137 not so little boxes. That means it took them 13.8 minutes to pack each box, which seems like a lot to me? Anyways, they did a good job and earned their $20 tips (which they seemed surprised to receive...)

I promised Susan that I'd upload some pictures, perhaps later tonight...

73 1/2 Hours Later...

I never thought it would come to this - Susan insisting that I "post something on [my] blog already, gosh!" Which is an ideal opportunity for me to remind all you RSS-o-phobes out there that there is a better way to keep up with my posts (and about a zillion other things on the web).

Anyways, I held a relatively successful ($240) garage sale on Saturday morning, the first person arrived an hour early and rang our doorbell. There was only a 40% chance of rain, but that's exactly what it did for the first hour while several people loitered in the front yard as I set everything out.

Boy it's a good thing we decided not to have it last Saturday, there was a 90% chance of rain and it was beautiful all morning. Speaking of which, it's supposed to get up to 72° in Stockton this week - apparently mother nature is trying to punish us before we leave. Though I hope the warm weather doesn't melt too much snow up near Tahoe - I'll be sure to lather up the sunscreen for this weekend when it will be 50° and sunny while we ski (in t-shirts?)

Learning About Myself

I Googled myself after reading a Lifehacker special on establishing your online identity - no surprise that I wasn't atop the 10.7 million results returned, but a search for bradleypjohnson is basically 100% me. Which uncovered some interesting things...

While laid up post ACL surgery, Susan took a picture of her and Pekoe that I put up on Flickr. I was somewhat curious why that particular photo had so many more views than anything else uploaded at the time, and recently discovered that the "boobs" tag I put on it resulted in Susan being featured on chicksnbreasts and flickrlicio.us. Way to go!

All the photos I upload have the Creative Commons Attribution license, which also seems to have resulted in other websites & blogs using them...

  • Thumb drive is useful for transferring digital pictures and huge PowerPoint files for class/social events that we don't want to send via e-mail and don't want running off of a CD/DVD. We're cheap students, so why waste media when you can just thumb drive it.

Rocketboom Host on CSI

Susan doesn't know it, but our TiVo is subscribed to the Rocketboom videoblog - 3 whole minutes each day "covering a wide range of information and commentary from top news stories to quirky internet culture...with a heavy emphasis on international arts, technology and weblog drama." I think host Amanda Congdon seems a bit unnatural in front of the camera, but the producers of CSI must not agree since she's on tonight's episode. I guess I have to TiVo that now...

Favre: Retirement or Trade?

Not sure why I'm bothering to include a link to his blog, but Jeff forwarded me a couple ESPN articles about Brett Favre this week. The first one about him "leaning toward retirement" is probably common knowledge by know, but the second is an interesting point of view that I hadn't considered until reading it.

While the thought of seeing him in another team's uniform doesn't exactly sit well with me, I also respect his desire to play for a contender. Does that make me the worst Packer backer ever?

Good to Great

After my final math tutoring session (tear), I checked out what will probably be the last of my haul from the Stockton library. Most were recordings of material the symphony will be playing on Saturday night, but I also decided to try and tackle one more book. Not sure why I think I have time to read it, but having a deadline should help motivate me like it did when Brie was moving away and I had her copy of The World is Flat.

A few pages into chapter 1, I read about a Forbes magazine cover from 1991 that killed Gillette CEO Colman Mockler. Nothing came up on Google Image Search, but I did find the first chapter of the book on the author's website in case you want to get a feel for it...
