DPReviews My Camera

Everybody's favorite digital photography website posted an in-depth review of my new Samsung NV10 last week, and I wanted to share some highlights...

"...the new 'Smart Touch' user interface; one of the only serious attempts at improving the ease and speed of access to advanced controls we've seen in over a decade of digital camera development..."

"In playback mode...You scroll through images using a 'slider bar' (sliding your finger along the buttons under the screen). This is the only time I found the Smart Touch system annoying; it's way too easy to 'overshoot' and it's actually quite hard to scroll one image at a time; it really needs a 'next and previous' button." (I totally agree)

"The biggest - and to be honest the NV10's most serious flaws - are the excessively high saturation and contrast levels (which can't be changed)."

"let's be honest; high ISO on a 10MP this small doesn't really work, does it?"

"'ASR' mode...works - sort of - but it can't work magic, and there is a serious impact not only on image quality (a huge leap in noise and loss of detail) but on performance too...adds 4 or 5 seconds to the 'shot-to-shot' time...this certainly isn't a replacement for optical stabilization (or even a feature that deserves its own spot on the mode dial).

I'm going to really put it through its paces in New York this weekend...

  • Can't wait to explore NYC with you & your new camera this weekend!...but "put it through its paces"? Is that another one of your "mature" sayings? ;)

  • I'm full of mature sayings, but immaturity must be like Jell-O cuz there's always room...

  • Obviously, camera class didn't help you put it through its paces. Filters on Day 3...what a joke. You'll have to show me your pics for Day 2.

Red Bull Coming to Campus

Anyone want to check out Red Bull: Art of the Can at the Weisman? The new plan is to go on Sunday 11/5 at 3 PM.

Gold star if you can figure out how many cans are in the face sculpture above (I have no clue).

You Should Subscribe to VSL

I prefer to consume my information in a visual format, and wanted to give props to the folks at Very Short List for their unique ability to distill a book, CD, movie or TV show to its 3-5 ingredients.

For example:

That books actually looks really good...

Airport PA Fun

Someone is having fun with the Sacramento airport public address system tonight - they have paged "Lisa Noonan" like seven times...

Breakin' the Law

Ever wonder why restaurants sing random (usually clap-happy) versions of Happy Birthday? Hint: not because they think they are creative.

Turns out the song is copyrighted by Warner Chappell music, and singing it without paying royalties is copyright infringement.

Who knew? Apparently, Dmitry's accounting professor...

You Heard It Here First

The Minnesota Wild are going to have a perfect season. I predicted it 8 days ago after they beat the Canucks in OT, and they've won twice since then.

The puck drops in LA 2 hours from now, but wild.com visitors seem to think they won't win all 3 games of the upcoming road trip...

...and they call themselves fans?

Ask Goes Mobile

Ask is giving Google a run for its money - at least on my phone. The new Ask Mobile is sweet! Can't get the address "send to phone" feature to work right, but that's my only complaint thus far.

Just booked next weekend's New York hotel for a paltry $201/night - thanks, Priceline!

Good Run

60° weather was begging me to go for a run.

3.4 miles/33 minutes = 9 minute miles, not too shabby.

Soundtrack:
  • Van Halen - Right Now
  • Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
  • War - Low Rider
  • Jet - Cold Hard Bitch
  • Linkin Park - Papercut
  • Maroon 5 - Harder to Breathe
  • O.A.R. - Crazy Game of Poker

Internet Cartoons Rule

Thea sent me a cute e-card starring hoops and yoyo:

Which reminds me a lot of my favorite "behind the scenes" web video:

Maybe my affinity for Studio 60 can be explained by how amused I am by these?

Which reminds me, any Studio 60 fans out there that have an opinion on 30 Rock? I've never seen it...

Think You're A Photographer?

My new digital camera arrived yesterday, just in time for photography class and my triumphant return to New York. Ironically, I got my last digital just before a trip to the Big Apple* in 2003. Hopefully I will have some glorious pictures to share soon, but wanted to share the link to an online photo contest that could earn you a new camera of your own...

*I only recently realized that referring to Minneapolis as "the Mini Apple" was a nod to New York, apparently I'm slow?

Long Drive...

The bad news? I just electrocuted myself in the cigarette lighter AC adapter.

The good news? It seems to have cured my driving fatigue due to lack of sleep last night!

C'Mon, Twins...

Yesterday's loss was definitely a let down, but I'm fully confident that we can all ride Boof's shoulders to victory this afternoon.

Need I remind the players that 41% of ESPN.com "experts" predict the Twins will win the World Series?
