Happy Gilmore Gone Wrong

Kristi and I played with drewandtoni in a United Way golf tournament last Friday at Lockeford Springs.

As a tournament victory slipped away from us between swigs of smuggled Miller Lite, we decided to have some fun on the Hole #12. The idea was to "Happy Gilmore" our approach shot, but run off to the right if you miss so the next player could take a swipe...

Kristi didn't miss.

The original clip is better, but may cause a neck injury...

  • Wow... Just... Wow... Apparently, I'm now the only one of my brothers not to get hit with golf paraphernalia by their girlfriends.

How come we don't get a diagram of where she hit you?

Crazy Delicious

According to Matt Weaver, Red Vines "have high glucose and low fructose" which make them "great candy for athletes" - must be why I like 'em so much.

They were pretty popular in the car between Lodi & Napa on Wednesday, that's for sure.

Thank You Dave Matthews

Because you play Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" like you wrote it, I saved 10 cents on my Caribou this morning. The $35/year fan club membership almost pays for itself!

Dear Linda Cohn,

Please stop referring to your ESPN studio as "The Nerve Center of College Football."

Its an unfortunate combination of tacky and cocky...

Smooth Face

I used vegetable oil to shave this morning, and it worked surprisingly well...

I wonder if Crisco will do the trick?

Light Rail to MSP Woes

For several trips to the airport, I've been secretly afraid that they would change the street parking restrictions near Light Rail Stations and ruin my standard travel protocol. Today, it happened. Sort of. You need a permit to street park on the block near the 46th St Station (and presumably others), but there are no restrictions on the next block over - guess where all the cars were?

Stick It to Amazon

Let's say you find something on Amazon that you absolutely MUST have, and it even offers free super saver shipping! But you have to spend $25 to qualify, and the item is only $22. Give up and pay for shipping? Hardly.

Thanks to Lifehacker, I learned about filleritem.com - which searches Amazon for low-cost items that qualify for free super saver shipping to bump your order total over $25 and get you that elusive free shipping. Nice!

Dear Ali,

I was going to thank you for the Caramel High Rise you accidentally bought me, but then I looked at the nutrition info* - now I can't eat lunch!

*to be fair, it was skim which saved me ~120 calories and 15 grams of fat...

For bringing my attention to the Sony UK Bravia commercial...

My Favorite New Blog

I tend to think my blog has decent content and presentation, but then I spent some time with Wired Magazine deputy editor Thomas Goetz today.

Among other things, he introduced me to Filmoculous.

I think I'm in love.

Is This _______ Cheaper Online?

No sooner had I added The Long Tail to my Ringfo "books I've read" list than I learned about Frucall:

What is ringfo? You call 617-712-3574 and enter an ISBN or UPC, it tells you how much that book, CD, DVD, or whatever costs on Amazon.

How is Frucall different? You call 888-DO-FRUCALL and enter an ISBN or UPC, but it grabs prices from Yahoo, Google Base and StreetPrices.com in addition to Amazon. You can buy the item immediately, add a VoiceNote, or text the prices to your phone.

You can also tie Frucall to your Google Calendar, which allows you to search for and listen to upcoming events from your phone - pretty slick. Too bad the site doesn't support RSS, making the stuff I bookmark tough to share. Otherwise, it's a pretty handy service with the holiday shopping season approaching...

  • Thanks for mentioning Frucall! We are very happy to read you found us to be handy for this upcoming holiday season. While we currently don't support RSS on our site (though some great surprises are coming up...) we do offer the option of creating a wishlist over the phone. Your friends/family members can hear and receive your wishlist as a text message just by entering your phone number. Thanks again for your input and please feel free to contact us with any more comments or suggestions!

NYT Free Access Week

Most of the wonderfully-written (somewhat liberal) New York Times is available online free of charge, but they hide some of their best stuff behind the TimesSelect curtain and actually expect people to pay for it! Except this week.

Get your fill for the next 6 days, kids...

NYC Highlights

I totally meant to post every day from New York with the free hotel internet, but there was always something more interesting to do... Since it's been a few days, I will attempt to choose just one highlight from each day.

Thursday:
Spontaneous dinner with Michael & Missy
Friday: Free admission to MoMA - I could have spent all day there.
Saturday: Wicked the Musical, complete with Ryan's backstage tour.
Sunday: Relaxing in the hotel room and ordering in surprisingly good sushi.
Monday: Enjoying the Central Park Conservatory Garden before it was overrun by a busload of schoolchildren.

StarTrib Roundup

I read a few good articles on Star Tribune's mobile website today, which is blissfully void of the obnoxious sell-out background that sometimes adorns their traditional homepage.

Today's offender? The Minnesota State Lottery:

Do advertisers really think that visually molesting us with 300 copies of their logo will do anything but create legions of angry internetters? Anyways...

According to a report released today by the MN Dept of Public Safety, you are twice as likely to get a ticket if pulled over by State Patrol in the Twin Cities than most other parts of the state:

If you want to live forever, consider drinking "dozens of bottles of red wine a day."

A postal worker was attacked by a squirrel in Oil City, PA.

As I was writing this post, Torii Hunter won a Gold Glove for the sixth consecutive year, yaay!
