Water = Poop

I don't think I have ever posted an e-mail forward to my blog, but I can't resist when the word poop is involved :)

In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria found in feces.

In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of Poop.

However, we do not run that risk when drinking wine (or rum, whiskey, beer or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.

Remember:

Water = Poop
Wine = Health

Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of shit!

Thanks, Jason!

That was fun... NOT!

I had front row seats to the Timberwolves' epic meltdown tonight - blew a 25 point lead with less than 18 minutes to play...

This why I love Game Flow on ESPN - visually captures the debacle.

Thirsty?

According to this NYT article, you should reach for (in the following order):
  1. Water (duh)
  2. Coffee or tea
  3. Alcohol (yaay!)
  4. Low-fat milk

I'm especially intrigued by that "a study of more than 600 men suggested that drinking three cups of coffee a day protects against age-related memory and thinking deficits" and drinking tea "may...help prevent kidney stones."

Have you ever tried Lipton Diet Green Tea with Citrus? Yum. I think it's going to be added to my list of frequently-purchased beverages...

  • Skim milk
  • Bottled water (for coffee)
  • Diet Pepsi
  • Diet Mountain Dew

  • I absolutely LOVE Lipton Diet Citrus Green Tea. It's amazing. Unfortunately, I can never bring myself to buy it because it's so expensive.

I did find the recipe on TopSecretRecipes.com, and I bought the tea. I'll let you know how it goes.

    ---------------------------------
Diet Lipton Green Tea with Citrus
    ---------------------------------

    4 cups boiling water
2 bags green tea bags (Lipton brand is best)
    2 1/2 tsp Equal (10 single-serving packets)
    1 1/4 tsp True Lime
    1/4 tsp orange extract

    Instructions:

Pour boiling water over tea bags and steep for one hour. Add remaining ingredients and chill.

    Makes:

    32 ounces

You + Kleenex = ?

I've yet to find a Kleenex box design that I like, but don't see myself shelling out $5 to paste my own photo on one anytime soon...

Wordplay

In addition to being the name of a catchy Jason Mraz song, Wordplay is a documentary about New York Times crossword puzzle editor Will Shortz and the people who love his puzzles.

Much of the film covers the 2005 American Crossword Puzzle Tournament and it's contestants, so although I watched the DVD a couple months ago I decided to wait and blog about it this weekend...

This year's tournament ended today, with 22 year old Tyler Hinman winning the main event for the third straight year. I think his secret is the Trogdor t-shirt he wears during the final day of competition.

Watching the film made me want to try and enjoy crossword puzzles, but I always end up feeling stupid and giving up.

  • You pretty much summed up my response to the documentary. I tried giving crosswords another shot after watching the movie as well.

I thought it was a low blow when one of the people intereviewed in the movie mentioned that computer programmers are typically good at crosswords, since they are used to thinking in logical patterns. -- I guess I really suck.

California, RIP

A week ago today, Kristi and I drove up to Mendocino to explore California's north coast - something neither of us had ever done before. We had some recommendations from friends, but there wasn't time for our normal amount of pre-trip planning.

We were lucky to end up staying at (the beautiful) Griffin House Inn, recently named as one of Sunset Magazine's Top 10 Romantic Cottages , which had a copy of (the quite handy) 101 Things to Do in Mendocino. As it turns out, 101 Things is "your multimedia travel source for California, Oregon and South Carolina"

Anyways, it was a great trip, as you can probably tell by the photos I uploaded last night. I'm going to miss California - no more trips planned because Kristi moves back to Minneapolis in 6 days!

Wow

McDonald's is expanding a 10 month old pilot where they sell bottles & cans of Pepsi alongside the traditional Coke fountains.

One executive with ties to Coke says "It's fountain that tips the scales for Coke, and it's McDonald's that tips the fountain scale."

Could this be the beginning of a power shift?

Apple Stores Rock

Interesting article in Fortune about Why Apple is the Best Retailer in America.

Would you have guessed that the Apple Store sells 50% more per square foot than Tiffany & Co?

Annual sales per square foot, in fiscal 2006:
Apple Stores$4,032*
Tiffany & Co.$2,666
Best Buy$930*
Neiman Marcus$611
Saks$362

* Data are for the past 12 months

  • This isn't THAT surprising considering the amount of foot traffic at Apple stores - they're open and inviting and sitting your local mall.

Tiffany stores have DOORS on them, not exacting asking y'all to step right up.

  • Not to mention they are selling expensive ass computers and ipods...doesn't take much!

Wi-Fi Goodness

TravelPost has a comprehensive list of US airport Wi-Fi hotspots - look at all the free ones!

Hotspotr
is a Google Maps-enabled, user-generated directory of cafes with Wi-Fi. It even has a mobile version, which pretty much makes me an instant fan.

  • You can basically assume if you're in a crappy airport, the internet is free unless you're in HI or AK (or Washington, DC?). But then Green Bay charges for internet which screws up that whole theory... Damn Packers.

Old News Alert

Bike Race in St. Paul Skyways

Watch the video - this picture doesn't do it justice.

Too bad it was time trials - releasing everyone at once would have been much more awesomer.

Thanks for the tip, Jeff!

  • This winter when I went to an NLL game my friends that live in downtown St. Paul and I walked that whole "course" all the way to Excel. We talked about the bike race and how insane (yet totally awesome) of an idea it is.

I'm surprised there aren't more pads up. You'd think something would break -- whether it be a glass door, a bike, or the biker.

'Bout Time

After scoring a perfect 32/32 at the DMV this morning, I am (almost) a licensed driver in state of Minnesota.

I did some quick math and estimate that I have lived in MN for about 2400 days, which means it only took me 40 times longer than the "legal requirement" to get a driver's license within 60 days of moving to the state.

Not bad.

Shower Timer

Have you ever wondered how long it takes you to shower? I accidentally discovered today that it takes me 5:41 - the same length as "Alive" by Pearl Jam.

The obvious next step was to create a "Shower" playlist in iTunes, so I carefully chose 16 other songs of similar length.

Since I don't anticipate being in the same mood every morning, I chose a variety of styles that do not all involve singing.

Needless to say, I can't wait for my next shower.

I Hate Snow

On Sunday morning, my MSP-CLT flight on US Airways was canceled due to bad weather. The agent said there were no seats available until Monday, which would have translated to missing a precious day of golf in Myrtle Beach (clearly unacceptable).

I looked on the internets and discovered that I could book a Sunday night flight, so I told the agent but had to talk to her supervisor before I got it booked. I got to the golf cottage by midnight and was on the course 8 hours later.

Fast forward 4 days, and my CLT-MSP flight is now canceled due to bad weather. I simultaneously checked usairways.com and called the agent to rebook - except this time, he insisted that flights I could buy online were not available for him to rebook me on.

Could someone please explain how that is possible?!?

In case your name is Kristi or Locki or you care otherwise, here is my flight info for tomorrow...

USAir 923
Depart CLT at 2:20 PM
Arrive ORD at 3:29 PM

United 463
Depart ORD at 6:05 PM
Arrive MSP at 7:38 PM

I just hope the weather decides to cooperate:

I'm really glad that CLT has free Wi-Fi, but not so glad that it won't be smoke-free for 2 weeks...
