Barry Diller's Empire

Continuing the trend of me posting about being surprised that X owns Y, a "Who Owns What v2.0" image I discovered while reading Fimoculous has prompted me to react to the diversity of IAC's portfolio...

Everyone knows that Google owns YouTube and Yahoo! owns Flickr (which is surprisingly missing from the image), but would you believe that Ticketmaster, Citysearch, Expedia, LendingTree, Evite, Match and Ask.com are all owned by the same company? I was.

1000 Mile Weekend

We left the Twin Cities at noon on Thursday to catch the Packers/Jaguars game with Wade and Ali, left Green Bay at 9 AM on Friday to visit 7 potential wedding reception venues in and around Milwaukee, left Kristi's parents house at 4 AM on Saturday to surprise Josh at his parent's cabin in Nisswa at noon, and finally got back this afternoon around 5 PM.

I mapped it out, and we easily cleared 1000 miles, including a milestone for the Mazda. Glad to be home safe!

While at the cabin, I was explaining the "shampoo effect" - which is the effect of doing a little bit of something (like drinking alcohol) after doing a lot of something and getting the same effect, like if you wash your hair twice during the same shower. I wondered aloud if there was an article on Wikipedia, and pledged to add it if one didn't exist. As it turns out, it has been added - and deleted - twice...

She Said Yes!

This may not be news to anyone reading this, but Kristi and I are engaged! I proposed on the terrace at Domaine Carneros on Friday, August 10th:

We are super excited and have started to plan a wedding that will probably be in Milwaukee next summer. We just registered kristiandbrad.com, and will be using that as the primary method of communicating information about the wedding over the next year or so - bookmark it!

I should probably admit that my mom beat me to blogging about this, but if you followed me on Twitter you would have known right away!

I just sent myself a gift certificate from Amazon.com, and was surprised by the fine print:

"This gift certificate is valid for 18 months, followed by a 6 month grace period, after which it will expire."

How about "This gift certificate is valid for 2 years."?

Is this a cry out for help? You know, I can talk to Kristi. I'm sure we can come up with some thoughtful gifts so you don't have to "surprise" yourself with $5 gift cards, only hoping to bring a fleeting glimmer of happiness into your daily routine.

It wasn't a fad, but I just don't find the time to post as frequently anymore. The truth is I used to have more free time at work to troll the internet and find interesting stuff and write about it, but that's not the case anymore :(

Oui, Oui

The last two movies I've seen (Paris, je t'aime and Mon meilleur ami) have been playing at Landmark Theatres, which I was surprised to learn is part of "a vertically-integrated group of media properties co-owned by Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban"

They've got two financing/production companies - 2929 Productions is focused on "interesting and thought-provoking feature films" and HDNet Films is all about "narrative and documentary features to be shot on high-definition video."

As for distribution, they own Magnolia Pictures and the aforementioned 61-theater chain, as well as the HDNet cable channel.

I'm not sure why knowing that he owns a media conglomerate makes me like Cuban more, but it does...

When I visited Hannah, we went to see "The Ten" at a Landmark theater... It was pretty funny, and then it got kind of weird, and then it was really weird... Overall, I think you might like it..
