His name is Earl

I was happy to see that light rail between Minneapolis and St Paul was approved by the legislature, although it seems the U of M isn't excited about shutting down Washington Ave to vehicle traffic.

The article quotes a "veteran bus rider" named Wildcat Earl, which seems about as appropriate a name as Colt McCoy is for the quarterback at Texas.

Way to go, Mikaela!

(one of my Mom's students)

Only one of my four picks was chosen as a national finalist, but it was also the national winner!

I've been touched

I snapped up an 8GB iPod Touch during the latest Woot-Off, and it finally arrived today! This officially marks the beginning of Verizon vs AT&T signal quality and the BlackBerry vs iPod keyboard face-off...

Song Chart Meme

Back in the day, this blog was about explaining things to people. I was going to include links to old posts, but reading through them was taking too long - why did Blogger wait so long to add labels?!?

Anyways, today's lesson is meme

Pronounced 'meem', a meme is a "unit of cultural information...that gets transmitted...from one mind to another." Not surprisingly, the Internet has dramatically increased the number and rapid spread of memes. Wikipedia has an exhaustive list of examples, including LOLcats and Diet Coke/Mentos.

After receiving a couple e-mail fowards with song lyrcs distilled into some type of chart, I decided that this has to be a meme. As proof, this Flickr group has 886 images.

Who's coming with me?

I'm stoked about this year's Summerfest lineup - pretty sure I'm going to live in Wisconsin from 6/26 to 7/6. I created a public Google Calendar called 'Summerfest 2008' with the shows I want to see...

  • Alicia and I are considering going to Stevie Wonder on 6/26. Paolo Nutini is also playing a free stage after that so it'll be a good night...

Blogging from my Curve

I got a BlackBerry Curve from AT&T this afternoon, which I plan to try over the next month to see how I like a non-Windows Mobile smartphone - and if AT&T or Verizon has better service in Evanston/Hyde Park. I only signed up for voice & data, so we'll see if I can show off the 2 megapixel camera on this baby...

Seriously

The Director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory spoke at Serious Play last week, and brought a replica of the Phoenix Rover (which lands on Mars in ten days) with him.

A week ago, I didn't even know we had something hurtling through space, and now I'm following it on Twitter.

  • Yeah, I watched the link (via @gruber) and was pretty impressed. I kept thinking to myself 1) this is a very well put-together video, and 2) Wow, I had no idea this thing was en route!

These Kids Are Good

I mentioned the Doodle 4 Google contest almost three months ago, and it has now come down to a public vote between 40 finalists!

One of my mom's students was a state finalist, but was not chosen as one of the regional finalists. Nevertheless, there is some amazing work for you to vote on - these were my picks:

A Fish Swallowed a Google by Sean in West Virginia

Up in the Clouds by Grace in Washington

The Google Sign by Molly in New York

Live Music by Victoria in Texas

Save the Airlines

Whenver I fly, I check in online ahead of time and print my boarding pass. Except for that one time, when I was camping in Yosemite and didn't have access to a computer, and ended up missing my flight and sleeping in a chair at SFO. But I digress...

Since the boarding pass takes up less than one sheet of paper, it occurred to me that the airlines should sell advertising on the rest. A coupon for one of the many restaurants or retailers I walk past on the way to gate G92? Think of all the relevant impressions, given that I often double and triple check that I've got my boarding pass while packing.

Doing my part to offset rising fuel costs...

Not sure what I'm trying to say here, but it's a slightly different message than my personalized M&M. [via]

Dozens of Cartwheels!

Two years ago, I had the crazy idea of doing cartwheels during the Twin Cities Race for the Cure to raise money for breast cancer research. I did it again last year, and have raised nearly $1000 - one cartwheel at a time.

Guess what? I'm doing it again. See photos and video of my previous shenanigans at the brand-spankin-new cartwheelsforthecure.com
