Pour One Out
Continuing my half-day Friday tradition of stealing someone's Wall Street Journal (since they are out of the office)...
I was introduced to Wine Library TV host Gary Vaynerchuk, whose "folksy" video reviews have helped the shop grow to become "one of the highest-grossing independently owned wine and liquor retailers in the nation, with about $40 million in annual revenue."
In Episode #76, he used phrases like "smells horrible," "sweaty feet," "unattractive," "locker room jock strap stinky" to describe the 2004 Falesco Vitiano - and then linked to the page where they sell it for $7.99.
Sadly, I also learned that Maynard Ferguson died on Wednesday. I'm definitely gonna listen to "Live from San Francisco" on the plane in his honor - off to the airport!

Travel, Twins & Toothpaste
I'm heading to Chicago tomorrow to spend a weekend with Gretchen & Brie - two "ex" coworkers from sunny California - looking forward to seeing them for the first time in 3 and 9 months, respectively!
We've got (crappy) tickets to the Twins/White Sox game on Sunday, but I'm not too optomistic about the Silva/Buehrle matchup. But Santana and Radke should take care of business, and a series win is all that matters - since it also means retaking the lead for the AL Wild Card.
Dmitry and I were discussing the new TSA requirements, which restrict things like shampoo and toothpaste from checked luggage. He was recently gifted a huge box of "travel size" Crest from his friend who graduated from dental school (I think?) - and I started wondering what all that toothpaste would look like if squeezed from the mini tubes.
So I picked up a tube of Aquafresh at Target tonight...

Okay, that is just bizarre. But i could see an art exhibit with all different swirls of different toothpastes. They would eventually dry, and probably get cracked and pasty......
But I bet you could shellac them or something.
Then again, maybe a photo project is smarter.

I'd like to see what the Crest Whitestrips would do to the black background. Come on...you know you've got another $35 to waste.

An 18 man roster!?! Good God man, spread the wealth. It looks like your team has a chance. It's definately the second most talented team I've ever seen. Good Luck, Brett Favre
PS - Do you still have any of those Vicodin left over from June?

So I am alittle behind on keeping up with my blog. I am gonna have to agree with Mr. Favre on the "Good God man" comment, an 18 man roster is a bit much. I would have went running back in both the first two rounds. Busta

Hello, Bush
The presidential motorcade just drove through the 394/169 interchange, I happened to notice on the way back to my desk after grabbing some Caribou with Dmitry.
Traffic was backed up for miles on 394, can't wait to get out and join the party during rush hour...

Golf 'n Balls
Pretty excited to have shot a 45 at Brookview tonight - might just be enough to pull our team out of last place on the final week of the league. Leaving my driver in the bag definitely helped, but the group behind us twice yelling to "hit the ball already" certainly did not.
It would be unfair to omit the round I played Saturday morning at Edinburgh USA with Wade and Crowley. I lost a dozen balls or so en route to a 116 - that course is not very forgiving...

Wow, shot a 45! Not bad for someone who has had 2 holes in 1! Just out of last place in league, my team did that on the very first hole on the last night of league. Congratulations on second worst. Dad

Sporty
It's shaping up to be a sports-tastic Sunday afternoon. I've got the Twins/White Sox game & PGA Championship on TV, and our fantasy football draft starts in 49 minutes.
Since I don't know shit about fantasy football, I signed up for a 30 day trial of ESPN Insider to give me access to a bunch of guys who actually know what they are talking about. Looks like I have the 6th pick in the draft, so I better go figure out which RB will score me the most points...

6th pick, that's tough. Hopefully I was still available. Please post your team so I can make fun of you. Thanks, Brett Favre

Light Sweet Crude
Last year, James Kunstler published a book called "The Long Emergency" about (among other things) how we are using more and producing less oil every day, slowly spiraling into a global energy crisis. There's a fascinating excerpt in Rolling Stone, but it lacks any real suggestions as to what to do about the impending doom.
I read that article 4 months ago, and am perplexed as to why I didn't blog about it - certainly had an impact on me. Until today, when I read Malcolm Gladwell's case for geothermal energy - his dad installed a system and "guest blogged" about it.
Speaking of which, I think Busta needs to guest blog again sometime soon...

Blogger in Beta
I was thrilled to see that Blogger has finally made some of the changes that I've been ranting about since starting to use it 2.3 years ago...
Most notably, the ability to "tag" posts (so you could quickly find all the posts I've written about the Twins, or wine, or whatever) - and a feed for comments (which I broke down and created myself last month.)
They are "limiting the number of people who can switch over" to the new functionality, so try to remain calm as I wait my turn...

Fun With Photos & Maps
I finally got the rest of the pictures from our trip uploaded, check out the set to see all 46.
I also put some of the thumbnails on our map, but then started playing with a geotagging bookmarklet that allows me to pinpoint the latitude & longitude of my photos and display them on a site like flyr:

Endless trips to awesome places... DCI championship... AND time to map it all with pictures and technology and whatnot??? What is it that you do for a job? And how does one get that job?
In my two weeks between summer job and back to the old usual job, I plan to do exciting things to like... clean my apartment.. wash my car... maybe go to Madison to visit my sister... woo-hoo!
And where's my poem, Brad? I'm pretty sure I get one. It better be good.

Call Me A Dork, But
I'm stoked for this weekend's DCI World Championships in Madison, even though I have to miss an SNL-themed birthday party for Kristi, Toni & Josh in CA to attend.
To prepare for the main event, I'm going to watch tonight's quarterfinals via satellite at a movie theater. Popcorn for dinner, anyone?

Oh Mel
Apparently, I find it rather difficult to identify movies once the faces of the actors have been removed...
I gave up after getting 16/60 on this quiz, how about you? Answers here.

PCH = Pretty Cool, Hey?
Starting tomorrow morning, Kristi and I will be rollin' down the Pacific Coast on Highway 1. We found Windows Live Local to be real handy in planning the trip, and it even allows us to share the itinerary - check it out! The plan is to update the pushpins with photos as we go, feel free to follow along over the next few days...
On a semi-related topic, Nick told me about the Gigapxl Project a couple weeks ago - they are working on a Portrait of America that includes the Bixby & Big Creek bridges we will drive over tomorrow in Big Sur.
