Trevor vs Paul

This is a snapsot of the scorecards from today's first round - Trevor simply wanted to announce to the Internet how he kicked his old man's ass.

Twice.

In one day.

Your HTML cannot be accepted

I'm a big fan of post templates in Blogger, and frustrated by Movable Type's apparent lack of comparable functionality. I recently tried to change my template, and discovered that the target="_blank" attribute of the anchor tag (causes links to open in a new window) is no longer allowed!

After some deep, calming breaths, I decided to live without them - until I realize that the table tag I wanted to add is also illegal! What gives?!? How am I supposed to post the results of my upcoming rounds in handy HTML table format? You can bet that I'm not going to type all those damn trs and tds every time.

It just occurred to me that any non-HTML speaking readers aren't going to enjoy this post all that much. How about some audience participation - are you for or against links on The Myth popping up in new windows? I wouldn't want to lose a reader because I linked to something more interesting than I had to say...

  • I read your blog. All 3 paragraphs. Twice. None of it made sense to me at all except the fact that you stated "non HTML people may not understand this". When I tell you that sometimes you alienate people with your tech speak, this is a perfect example. I don't know what "popping up in new windows" means, or "table tags are illegal" and there are no context clues that help me.

Practice Schmactice

I think my body was somewhat confused when I tried to hit golf balls at the range today, considering it was thrashing the slopes just a few days ago. If that's not a good enough excuse to suck it up, I could blame it on a number of other factors...

  • Darkness
  • Mosquitos (Say what? In California?)
  • Hunger
  • Drawn out announcement about how they are closing the parking lot gates so hurry your ass up

If the real truth is that I lack any talent worth mentioning, the next few days are going to be a lot of work.

Time to start packing!

2005 SF Chronicle Wine CompetiSHON

I was trying to cram these comments into my linkblog, but decided a full blown post was necessary...

A Sac Bee columnist was one of many judges at the 2005 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, and wrote an entertaining and insightful account of his experience. If you are asked to log in, try username bugmenot01 and password bugmenot - courtesy of bugmenot.com.

To top it all off, the 2003 Earthquake Petite Syrah from Lodi's own Michael David Vineyards took home top honors as the best red wine (out of 3200+ total entries!).

Well Hello There

Another multi-day lull between posts, this damn puppy is really chewing up my evenings! Bahahaha, get it? Chewing up? Nevermind.

Susan and I celebrated VD prematurely, opting for a Sunday morning champagne brunch at Mallard's. I was scouring the web for information about the Wycliff "champagne" they served us - and found myself on Gasthof's website! That made me miss Minny, but I'll get my fix this weekend during Enjoy Life 2K5.

I whipped up some (non Betty Crocker) chicken & dumplings for the actual holiday, and even snuck a copy of The Notebook into our DVD player. Scandalous! Haven't seen it all yet, so hold your breath for a review. Chick flick perhaps? We didn't have any problems finishing a bottle of Domaine Ste. Michelle Cuvee Brut however, which was very green apple-y.

I'm thrilled that the Twins signed Santana, hopeful that the Vikings are on their way to Arizona, and disappointed that the NY Islanders won't have a shot at the Stanley Cup in 2005...

PS: If you're an iTuneser, be sure to check out the new Jack Johnson video currently featured in the upper right hand corner...

Nick's comment gave me an excuse to create a diagram of all blogs I'm aware of that were at least in some small part created as a result of The Myth. Please inform me of anything I may have missed, or credit that I shouldn't be taking...

Links to these and more are part of the "blogroll" over on the right. I should go one step further and give credit to Clara, who can take credit for getting me over the "should I blog" hump.

  • Okay I felt compelled "after" posting my comment (twice, in fact due to blogger glitches) to actually look up the word "pariah" Here's what I found:

    pa·ri·ah n.

    1. A social outcast: “Shortly Tom came upon the juvenile pariah of the village, Huckleberry Finn, son of the town drunkard” (Mark Twain).

    2. An Untouchable.

I guess I was trying to convey the second meaning. My original thought was to use the word "celebrity". I guess that's what I get for trying to sound learn-ed.

    Okay....I'm done. LOL

RePekoe

First of all, the family that "tested" our puppy on Wednesday has decided not to take him after all. With no prospects for unloading him, we're going to give Susan's allergies another whirl...

Second of all, I've been hearing variations on the word "pontiff" lately. NPR has been all over the Pontiff's recent hospitalization, which has made me more conscious of people using the word "pontificate". I must admit as a Catholic that the following sequence troubles me...

pontiff = pontificate = dogmatic = "authoritative, arrogant assertion of unproved or unprovable principles"

Note to self: cotton shorts + cotton boxers + elliptical machine = muy uncomfortable.

  • First of all--you are catholic?
Second, I think your definition of domatic meaning the same thing as pontiff and/or pontificate is somewhat in inaccurate. Domatic means a doctrine or a corpus of doctrines relating to matters such as morality and faith, set forth in an authoritative manner by a church. While pontiff is simply the pope.
    Just my 2 cents

Movies & Music

For whatever reason, I've sat down with ultra-high expectations for the last 2 movies we've watched. Did I say we? I suppose she was awake for more than half of each movie... Anyways, The Grudge and Friday Night Lights both fell just a wee bit short for me.

After a week or so with a cold and off the wine wagon, we hopped back on with the last of our 2004 Beaujolais Nouveau - Joseph Drouhin Primeur. The super strawberry flavors made this my favorite (over Duboeuf and Picard), but it deteriorated rapidly between last night and this evening. So much for letting your Nouveau breathe...

With the Grammys fast approaching, I decided to go through the list of nominees and choose who I'd vote for in some of the categories I feel entitled to have an opinion of. Keep in mind that I'm the type of person who likes to "spread it around" and "keep everyone happy", much to the chagrin of Kanye West.

  • Album of the Year: "American Idiot," Green Day Ray Charles

WWGD?

Nick put it rather well in a random e-mail to me last night...

What won't Google do?

You may have noticed that I linkblogged about Google Maps yesterday. A familiar feeling of giddy-ness overcame me upon hearing the news, basically the same way I react to anything that is new and Google.

As I started to play around, I was initially rather entertained by the smooth-ish scrolling and whatnot. But I soon discovered that you can't re-center the map by clicking on it, and Dmitry complained that it doesn't work with street intersections like other map engines do.

I think I'll stick with LineDrive@MapPoint.com for now...

Taco Truck

Much to Susan's dismay, I purchased today's lunch from a truck similar to the one pictured below. Much to my surprise, the $3.50 investment has yielded some tasty results. I've never much liked corn tortillas (why do they always give you 2?), so the $1 chicken tacos were passable. But you could seriously hurt someone with the sheer magnitude of the $2.50 beef burrito, which is rather heavy on the onions and cilantro.

I've been slacking on the posting lately, mostly because I like to spend my evenings with Pekoe (and Susan, when she's awake). That may change, since our puppy is being "test driven" by another family as I type. Susan's allergies are not getting along with Pekoe's allergens, so his days in our house are sadly numbered. Hopefully, he won't bite off any fingers today and we can send him to a loving family where people are home all day for him to play with...

Super Blog

I really hate it when Blogger deletes my posts because I took breaks while writing them. Reader's Digest version of the weekend, lucky you.

We locked ourselves out of the house Saturday morning, and consequently found out how easy it was to break back into. We took advantage of free admission to Sacramento museums at the Discovery History Museum (boring) and Crocker Art Museum (cool). Starbucks was doling out their Chintico drinking chocolate, which is basically warm chocolate syrup in a cup. I attempted to make sushi for dinner, but realized that I need a real knife and less sticky rice next time...

I'm sorry to have wasted this morning with Little Black Book, but then tested out my new bike computer (thanks Becca & Dan) on the way to the grocery store. We brought Cucumber Sandwiches and Candy Dessert Mix to this year's wardrobe-malfunction-free Super Bowl party and both were a hit (thanks Mary)

I can't believe another weekend is over!

That's a forshadowing for something that might be in the works, if you catch my drift. I'll fill you in on it more if it happens. Enjoy Pekoe. H8ing on Blogs

The Ottawa Citizen recently ran an opinion piece on blogs that proclaimed, among other things, that

...most blogs are not worth the cyberspace they occupy.

99% of bloggers would be the first to admit that they aren't trying to change the world, but does Crazy Chris Cobb's logic make my efforts here fruitless? I'd argue that the mini-legion of somewhat-loyal readers I pretend to have would disagree.

In other news, I got off work early today. Pekoe is adjusting well to his new digs in the laundry room after wet crapping all over the living room floor, and Susan won't stop bugging me to take the gigantic wasp kite for a ride...

WorldPerks Mission for Miles

All you Minnesota fools, peep this - NWA is doing yet another WorldPerks mileage promotion. This time, you have to answer 5 questions to determine how many bonus miles you're "playing" for. Since the questions vary (suprise), I'm going to attempt a Wiki-style post where everyone can collaborate (post comments, yo) and hopefully win some friggin' miles!

  • What does Hilton HHonors® call the reward program which earn both HHonors points and airline miles for the same stay? Double Dip
  • Where can you go on nwa.com to view special promotions available from WorldPerks® hotel partners? WorldPerks Mall(SM)
  • In how many different countries worldwide can Marriott Rewards members (mileage earners) earn WorldPerks® Miles for their stay at Marriott hotels? 65
  • (not verbatim) How many HHonors Points do you need to get for 1,000 WorldPerks miles? 10,000
  • (not verbatim) How many WorldPerks miles do you get for each qualifying stay at St. Regis or the Luxury Collection hotels? 750
  • (FAR from verbatim) What Starwood brand was introduced in 1995 as a full service but "right price" offering? Four Points Something

Hurry - you can only play 102 more times! (until May 15th)

(Why am I all of a sudden obsessed with parenthesis, anyways?)

  • What is the bonus when transferring 20,000 Starpoints to WorldPerks® Miles?
5,000 Bonus WorldPerks Miles in addition to the 20,000 WorldPerks Miles

Which loyalty program allows you to choose your earning style (Fixed Miles vs. Variable Miles per stay)?
    Hilton HHonors®

Miles earned while staying at any Marriott® participating hotel outside the United States will be based on what currency?
    U.S. Dollar

At how many different hotels and resorts locations can Hilton HHonors® members earn WorldPerks® miles?
    Over 2,700 locations

What is the minimum amount of Priority Club® award points to transfer into WorldPerks® account?
10,000 Priority Club Points (equates to 2,500 miles)

  • ow many WorldPerks® Miles are earned after spending $2,100 for one week's vacation at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa? - 6300 WorldPerks Miles

When staying at Marriott® Hotels & Resorts or Renaissance® Hotels & Resorts, 3 WorldPerks® Miles per USD spent can be earned on all qualifying charges. What do qualifying charges include? - All of these answers are correct

How many members have joined the Priority Club® program? - Over 23 million

How do I earn WorldPerks® Miles for Starwood Hotels & Resorts stays? - Present your WorldPerks® Number at Check-in

My Future Cellar...

A wine lover could implement RFID in his cellar. As each bottle comes in or out of the cellar, it would be automatically scanned by a RFID reader. The unique number would indicate that a particular wine is being brought into or removed from a cellar. Instant cellar management without the owner having to do anything.

Executive summary: Bland pop star

Boy, it's tough to find time for ze blogging when you are actually busy all day at work and spend your evenings cleaning up after a pooptastic puppy!

It's been awhile since a site has been blessed with the DKOKS seal of approval, but NNDB is definitely worth it. The "What Is" section drew me right in:

NNDB is an intelligence aggregator that tracks the activities of people we have determined to be noteworthy, both living and dead...it mostly exists to document the connections between people, many of which are not always obvious. A person's otherwise inexplicable behavior is often understood by examining the crowd that person has been hanging out with.

I can't say I agree with their assessment of Dave Matthews, however.
