Cryptoquip
I failed to blog last time I was in Minnesota, so apparently I'm trying to compensate during this trip?
I conquered the Cryptoquip in the SF Chronicle today, and I wanted to pose the challenge to my "legions" of readers... A Cryptoquip is a substitution cipher in which one letter stands for another. If you think X equals O, it will equal O throughout the puzzle. Single letters, short words and words using an apostrophe give you clues to locating vowels. Solution is by trial and error.

I will post a comment below that reveals the hint I was given, but if you solve it without peeking you are supa cool...

Muchas gracias for giving me something to do at work as I wait for lunch time. I spent 15 minutes googling for an online substitution cypher breaker, then gave up and did it the old-fashioned way. I cannot claim l33tness as I peeked at the hint. However, after setting up a supa queeny spreadsheet to hold the possible combinations, I was able to do it relatively quickly.

I'm dumb. I got it all to work except one word and I can't figure out what I missed up... That makes me crabby.

I figured it out without looking at any clues, but there was a mistake in the cryptoquip. In the first four-letter word, the "Q" should be an "O".
These things are usually puns, and you'd be amazed at how many start out the same way. They also tend to use a lot of the same words in puzzle after puzzle. If you do them a lot, you can figure them out pretty quickly.
