Another Day, Another Movie

After spending the morning sunburning my back while we built a patio in the backyard, Susan and I took the afternoon off for some cinematic distracSHON. About midway through Madagascar, it occurred to me that the movie was written as much for adults as it was animated for the kiddies.

I can't even think of all the examples of stuff that would fly over kids' heads, but references to Regis & Kelly, and Katie/Matt/Al from the Today Show stuck in my mind.

Of course, this isn't the first movie of its kind (Shrek, The Incredibles...) - but what was the first? How did this genre get started? I haven't seen The Lion King or Aladdin in awhile, but I'm pretty sure they weren't packed with kowtows to adult humor...

  • Aladdin is filled with adult jokes. All that crazy stuff Robin Williams does, if you can keep up with it, is stuff that goes over the kids' heads. He keeps morphing into different people and doing impressions of them.

But I would have to say that the old Loony Toons were written with adults in mind as much as kids.
