I am alittle concerned about your "three things I can do without"---a spare tire? Please tell me you had a spare tire in your trunk for "the Johnson & Busta Expedition" (and we were only 201 years behind). Jason

what about giving susan a kiss as an essential part of your day???
By , at 7/01/2005 1:33 PM

I can't put kissing Susan on the list because there are days she doesn't like me enough to let me get that close.
The spare tire refers to the one around my midsection, not the one in my trunk - I've had 4 nails in different tires within 3 months...

Ok. I know I have a reputation for whining... and it does sound like you were rather busy... but no call? No visit? And you were three blocks away from my parents' house (where I am frequently a guest during these horribly hot days .. they have air - I do not..)?? Oh well. Next time I'm in California, you may not be receiving a visit or call from me. So there. How d'ya like that?! Anyway. Glad you had a safe trip.

Delayed Post
Written on the Tablet while driving 3 days ago, no WiFi at the hotel to post...
Susan is currently driving (ssh, don't tell Enterprise) through Wisconsin (keep it on the DL, yo) for this leg of our journey - we are about 100 miles from Eau Claire and have 2 hours to make it to the rehearsal on time. It just started raining, hopefully there won't be any of that tomorrow!
We stopped at Starbucks & Taco Bell in Wisconsin Dells, and just wasted 6:13 our lives responding to a customer satisfaction survey since we didn't win the $1000 weekly prize. In case you've got some time to kill, the number to call is 888-731-9645 and store number 009564 - I'll hang on to the receipt.

Got 'er Done
Well, we technically got round #6 in this morning at Shoop, but it was rather forgettable. I'm really glad that Nick and Michael are picking up the game though, hopefully the Johnson boys men have many wore (less humid) rounds together in our future.
I gotta go teach my mom how to post pictures on her blog...

Random Update
So tired... had a nice get together this evening with extended family, then Nick and I enjoyed cigars around a campfire with the family (plus Susan). We're getting up at 5 AM to golf, so this has to be quick.
I subbed for uncle Paul in my Dad's golf league on Tuesday night, rather happy to shoot a 47 with 16 putts and 2 penalty strokes. Didn't fare quite as well on Wednesday morning, shooting 52 including 2 pars, 2 bogeys, 2 doubles, 2 triples and ended with a snowman (8) on the final hole (par 4).
Tomorrow we drive to Eau Claire for Muck & Erins wedding, can't believe our trip is almost over :(

Google Sightseeing
Have I ever mentioned the Google Sightseeing blog? It uses the satellite imagery from Google Maps to provide virtual tours of our continent.
One of today's posts was a shot of E&J Gallo winery in Modesto - we know a couple people who work there, but so far haven't succeeded in convincing them to let us drink from these tanks...

Half & Half
Today marks the halfway point of our trip, and Lisa (Susan's best high school friend) & Mark's wedding day. Susan is in the hair & makeup trailer right now getting ready, and I'm taking it easy until the ceremony this afternoon.
Looking forward to sporting my new pink shirt, one of several I've acquired on this trip (not all pink, sadly). I laid out all the clothes I bought the other day - I think it's 8 shirts, 3 pairs of jeans, a gopher hat, shoes, pair of shorts and sportcoat for under $400. Gotta love tax-free clothes shopping...
In case you haven't heard, Rebecca & Dan are pregnant! So happy for them - now it's time to see if this will bring us back from California earlier than planned (they are due in February). In other news, my parents got a "new" vehicle last night while I was out sucking it up at Olympic Hills with Tony - needless to say I did not repeat my performance from a year ago.

"You Guys Get A Lot of Rain Here"
I made a goal of playing golf 6 times during this 2 week vacation, and last night was round #2. Rich, Dan & I took a chance with the weather and played Parkview Golf Club last night - and got rained on.

No updates since Sunday - it's been nice to go "low tech" for awhile, but I broke down and spent a couple hours on the Tablet at Panera this morning. We slept way in on Monday, but got up in time to spend the afternoon with my mentor in Chanhassen - I had never seen Paisley Park before so that was cool too.
Rich and I were all over Halo 2 on the Xbox Tuesday - I'm not much of a gamer but still managed to stay up killing aliens past 2 AM. Becca took the day off, so we lunched at Olive Garden where the canneloni was good but the coffee was disappointing.
I'm heading to the American Sports Cafe this evening for $5 all you can consume Pizza & Miller High Life, and then on to the Twins game! See you there.

Whew
I try not to reuse post titles, but I feel like this might be a dupe - too lazy to check. I am POOPED after whirlwind day #2 in Minnesota, but can't go to bed since I just inserted these crappy Target imitation whitestrips. In case you're in the market, spend the extra $20 and get the Crest ones - these make me feel like I'm wearing a football mouthguard filled with foul epoxy.
I must have worn myself out while dominating at Phase 10 last night, since we slept until 8:30 this morning. After breakfast and a Target/Starbucks run, we showered and were off...
I found myself eating a buffet lunch at Santorini with Krista and Nic, who are leaving Minny for Lockheed Martin and sunny Dallas. The $8.95 bottomless drinks were key - I got to try two cocktails I had not previously experienced (Seabreeze & Greyhound).
I managed a 50 at Brookview with Wade (pretty sure he beat me) before heading over to Katie & John's to catch up before they leave for a 2 week Grecian Delight honeymoon. Then it was off to see Sarah & Jeff's new house for the first time, which was painted a beautiful yellow that reminded me of Marzipan:

Why I Need A Cameraphone
3 examples from the past couple days where having a cameraphone would have really come in handy...
The "Fry Box" cupholder at Target - anyone who eats fries often enough to justify one of these has a serious problem.
"Do It In A Stockton Datsun" license plate frame. It was hilarous, but reading about it just doesn't do it justice.
"I'm a 25 Gallon Blood Donor" license plate frame. Let me know if I'm doing the math wrong on this one:
You donate 1 pint of blood per visit, 4 pints to a quart, 4 quarts to a gallon. So 25 gallons = 400 pints? Given that you have to wait 56 days between donations, that means it took this individual a minimum of 22,400 days to achieve this mark. That's over 60 years!?!
posted by Brad at 6/10/2005 08:33:00 PM | permalink |

It takes eight donations to reach a gallon of blood.
(One pint = two cups and there are 16 cups in a gallon)
So that means it's only 200 donations to get 25 gallons
(8 times 25 equals 200).
So it takes a little over thirty years if you donate every time you're eligible.

TV Twinkies
Imagine my surprise to flip from the Women's College World Series on ESPN to ESPN2 and find - the Twins! No doubt because Santana is pitching, but this is really going to screw up my evening.
Who wants to dust off their college ID and catch the Twins/Giants game next Wednesday night at the Baggiedome? $3 tickets and 20,000 hot dogs sounds like a recipe for a good time to me...

10 months ago, my dad and I ripped the drywall off the north wall and tore out a bunch of dry rotted wood. We replaced most of the wood, but that's as far as we got before he head to leave.
It took me 10 months to hang drywall on that and 1 other wall, tape, sand and paint everything.

Not Quite Milwaukee
We just got back from Summerfest, covered with infield dust and a bit of a sunburn. Good times, though - the people watching was entertaining, conversation enlightening and company (Susan and Brie) outstanding.
Veronica and Rachel from MTV's Inferno 2 were "guest MCs", actually just hawking their line of "Future MILF" t-shirts. Oh, and there was music too...

San Francisco Park Olympics
Even though most every resident & tourist wasn't aware, the Olympics were held at Lafayette Park yesterday. Events included
- Croquet
- Bocce Ball
- Horseshoes
- Bean Hole
- Beer Relays
No medals were awarded, but Susan and I did take home the 2nd place trophy in the Horseshoes competition. I was also lucky enough to capture the Bocce Ball title, which means we added 2 pieces of hardware to our ever-growing collection. Too bad they are traveling trophies and we'll have to defend them in the fall...
We met lots of new faces, as well as a few we hadn't seen in years - namely Josh Danielson and Marc Wendorf. We had hecka fun despite the somewhat brisk weather conditions atop the hill, but the drive home required some emergency Peanut M&Ms and 711 coffee to keep me company (Susan and the dog were OUT).
Note that the 1st place trophies had little men atop them, while women adorned the 2nd place ones - nice work Tim. Who plays horseshoes in a skirt?!?

Light Up A Stogey...
I had my first ultrasound yesterday, but I'm somewhat disappointed to say that it is neither a boy nor a girl:
ULTRASOUND EVALUATION OF KIDNEYS
INDICATION: c/o right flank pain and hematuria.
TECHNIQUE: Transabdominal evaluation of retroperitoneum was performed with special attention to kidneys.
FINDINGS: The right kidney measures 113 x 47 x 62 mm and contains a calyceal stone measuring about 7 x 5 x 7 mm. The left kidney measures 118 x 59 x 61 mm. The renal parenchymal thickness is 11 mm on the right side and 14 mm on the left side. No hydronephrosis is identified.
The limited evaulation of the urinary bladder is unremarkable. The ureters cannot be well evaluated in the retroperitoneum.
IMPRESSION: A small right sided nonobstructive calyceal stone.
In case you ever decide to ask me for a kidney, keep in mind that the left one is larger, thicker, and seems less prone to producing stones...
Which means you can have the right one.
What's this about my bladder being unremarkable? I beg to differ.

Dear Melissa,
(This post is in response to a comment below, but I wanted to make sure everyone could see it in case they care...)
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.
It's basically just data - in the case of your blog, each new post is a new piece of data. The important thing is that the data is formatted in a standardized way. As a result, the RSS feed from your blog looks similar to the RSS feed from my blog (and everyone else's, you get the idea).
But RSS is not exclusive to blogs - any website can use the standard to advertise new pieces of data. I just happened to notice that the Star Tribune has RSS feeds - I'll be subscribing soon!
Since all sites that publish RSS feeds use a standard format, I can use a software program that understands RSS to view feeds from all over the Internet. This type of software program is called an aggregator.
I currently use Bloglines and NewsGator for aggregating RSS feeds, both of which are free. The "blogroll" on my website is simply a list of all the feeds I track in NewsGator.
But here's the best part: Instead of going to all the websites/blogs I want to keep track of to see if they have been updated, the RSS feed tells me when there is new content. I can now go to one place (my aggregator) and see if any of the 100+ feeds I track have been updated...
My case might seem a bit extreme, but there are people out there subscribed to over 1000 feeds. The point is that even if you only keep up on a few sites, using RSS with an aggregator will allow you to stay more current with less time & effort. Make sense?

Yes it does make some sense. I'm guessing that if I sign up at bloglines or newsgator, the process will be self-explanatory?
Is one of those better to join than another?
By Unknown, at 6/02/2005 7:46 AM
-
Yes, both services will help you get started with RSS feeds.
I have primarily used NewsGator, but recently started playing with Bloglines and honestly think I like it better. Why?
1) Posts are marked as read as soon as you view them, no extra click required 2) You can rename feeds from their default - for example, you could change "The Myth of the First Mover Advantage" to "Brad's Blog" if you so desired 3) Package Tracking, Weather, Unlimited Search Feeds & more are built in to Bloglines
I should probably also mention that I am beta testing NewsGator Outlook Edition 2.5, which anyone who uses Outlook will enjoy very much.
By Brad, at 6/02/2005 9:50 PM
RSS = Really Sad Story
I was thrilled to see that my hometown newspaper has several weblogs available on its website. As an out-of-towner, what a great way for me to keep up on what's happening of interest in my community.
I know I could just check their website or probably even sign up for an e-mail newsletter, but this is where RSS can be truly powerful. I can pick and choose the blogs that interest me, then add their feed to my aggregator and track them alongside everything else I care about...
...oh wait. All the feeds on the Journal Times weblogs point to the same one - for "Rob on the Road." I filled out the "contact us" form on their website to find out why, and was saddened by the response I received...
The blogs probably just create an RSS feed for the "main" blog, which is currently set to Rob on the Road. To be honest, the RSS feeds are a "side effect" to the blogs. We weren't terribly concerned about them.
Get with the program! You're breaking my heart.
UPDATE: I received another e-mail from the webmaster - "If we get more feedback about it, we may look into it more but you're the first person to ever speak up about it so it's not a priority..."
In case you care to nudge them in the right direction, the contact form is here.

Bradley,
I think I'm finally ready to learn some of this shizzit you're always talking about.
What is an RSS feed and why do I want one?
Why would I use a linkblog? What the heck is it?
This is in response to your offer on Monday, May 9:
"Does all of this scare & confuse you? I'd be more than willing to hold your hand if it means you'll give it a whirl..."

Nudge Nudge...
I wrote to the Journal Times about the same issue, and they seem to have the same excuse for everyone:
"We know but we never set up the RSS feeds. We just have whatever nucleus set up. We never really intended to set them up and I'm not sure how they work for the software. If I find time I'll look into it but it isn't a priority."
