Tooter

After blowing it off last week, I spent 2 hours this afternoon playing the role of math tutor for local elementary/middle school students. Considering my last math class was Calculus in 1998, it's been awhile since I've done a lot of this stuff.

I was trying to help one guy wrap his head around adding & subtracting negative numbers by comparing to starting at home (0), going x number of blocks away (negative), and turning around and heading back (positive).

Mom - thanks for the tip about "bringing in the real world," but I'm pretty sure I just confused the poor kid.

This tutoring business goes down at the local library, I was amused with their collection of pop CDs - pretty sure the librarian is in love with Bruce Springsteen.

Not that I blame her.

  • You need to draw a line and put 0 in the center and make hash marks back 20 to indicate -20 and then when you add 8, move forward 8 to -12....just a suggestion! Love you! Susan

  • I also do tutoring one day a week at a local middle school. Working with kids is probably as about a rewarding as you can get.
Furthermore, if the child does not get it he/she is probably just stupid.

p.s.--the stupid comment was a joke for anyone reading this that does not know me
